If I closed my eyes to listen to this and didn't recognize FDR's voice, I could swear it was some progressive commentator today.

(4,551 posts)He is the gold standard for all his successors.
1936 was the year FDR won his biggest landslide.
Always promote and defend progressive, Democratic policies and do not allow the Republicans to push you to the right.

(1,235 posts)"For nearly four years you have had an Administration which instead of twirling its thumbs has rolled up its sleeves. We will keep our sleeves rolled up.
We had to struggle with the old enemies of peace: business and financial monopoly, speculation, reckless banking, class antagonism, sectionalism, war profiteering.
They had begun to consider the Government of the United States as a mere appendage to their own affairs. We know now that Government by organized money is just as dangerous as Government by organized mob.
Never before in all our history have these forces been so united against one candidate as they stand today. They are unanimous in their hate for me, and I welcome their hatred."
It's like it could've been written for today, not 76 years ago. It's saddening that 80 years have gone by, and still the same dangers plague the nation, and the world.

(1,235 posts)"Here is my principle: Taxes shall be levied according to ability to pay. That is the only American principle."
"Human kindness has never weakened the stamina or softened the fibre of a free people. A nation does not have to be cruel to be tough."
"The only sure bulwark of continuing liberty is a government strong enough to protect the interests of the people, and a people strong enough and well enough informed to maintain its sovereign control over the government."
"Don't forget what I discovered that over ninety percent of all national deficits from 1921 to 1939 were caused by payments for past, present, and future wars." (emphasis added)
"We continue to recognize the greater ability of some to earn more than others. But we do assert that the ambition of the individual to obtain for him a proper security is an ambition to be preferred to the appetite for great wealth and great power."
And one more that President Obama and Vice-President Biden should bear in mind for their upcoming debates:
"When you see a rattlesnake poised to strike, you do not wait until he has struck to crush him."

Huh. Just doesn't sound the same 76 years later.
What a great Pres. I know all the debate points, But irregardless I still believe he did more to save this country than any before or since.

(4,551 posts)I belong to a lot of Democratic and Progressive groups which are good at sending out polls, videos, endorsements & articles etc.
That's where I get some of the material that I post here every day on different topics.
That's how I learned about Bill Clinton coming to AZ for Richard Carmona.
And just heard a new MA poll is coming out tomorrow with the teaser that one of the Senate candidates has seen a drop in their favorability rating. I'm hoping it's Brown . . .

(14,093 posts)He just turned 98 a few weeks ago.
He told me once that FDR had to endure very much of the same "He's a socialist!" conspiratorial nonsense from the right in his day.
He sees many parallels between then and now, but says the situation is much worse today, given the unregulated money pouring into politics and the difficulty for a president to act in the interest of the people.
TroyD
(4,551 posts)Wow. Had no idea there was an FDR aide still with us who is 98-years old.
Btw, FDR appointed the first woman in history to a Presidential Cabinet - Frances Perkins in 1933. She was the Secretary of Labor who was involved in all of the legislation carried out during the Great Depression.

(4,551 posts)The more people from the FDR period we can get on the record with their thoughts the better.
FDR would be HORRIFIED by Romney. He is the total opposite of FDR.
FDR was a 'good' example of a wealthy President. Romney would be a 'bad' one.
FDR used his wealthy background to go into public service and do good - Romney has done the opposite.
That's why the Dems have to point out the distinction when Republicans try to say things like "There's nothing wrong with Romney being wealthy. Afterall, Democrats like John Kerry & FDR were wealthy, so what's wrong with Romney being rich."
Not the same type of man AT ALL.

(20,136 posts)FDR didn't have a 24-hour corporate media carrying water for the right-wingers and fascists all day, every day and pushing their lies directly into the homes of millions.

(4,551 posts)For one thing, in an event which is not as well known as it should be, FDR was almost OVERTHROWN by Wall Street.
He was called a ''traitor to his class" and a 'despicable worm' amongst other things. He DID have to fight the media.
The way FDR overcame a lot of that and developed a connection with the people as you may know, is through his famous 'fireside chats' over the radio.
My 90-year old grandmother remembers his voice very well all these years later. She's like Betty White - 90 years old and still as sharp as ever.
NYC Liberal
(20,136 posts)hasn't gotten better; rather, it's simply been magnified 100 times. The media was bad then, but it's gotten worse. The right-wingers were bad then too, but they've just gotten even worse.
My maternal grandmother's side of the family was very liberal and they were huge FDR supporters. My grandmother had a big influence on me when I was growing up, being such a staunch FDR Dem and a political/news junkie.

(4,551 posts)In 1933, Retired Marine Corps Major General Smedley Butler was approached by wealthy industrialists and bankers who were plotting to create a fascist veterans' organization called the "American Liberty League" and use it in a coup d'état to overthrow United States President Franklin D. Roosevelt
Check it out some time. You won't hear about it in the mainstream corporate media.
