http://www.irishexaminer.com/breakingnews/world/bill-clinton-says-barack-obama-wasnt-the-uss-first-black-president-because-were-all-mixed-race-people-720759.htmlI just... wow. Bill's got some stones to be throwing Obama himself under the bus. I think some folks might start feeling a little taken for granted after this.

(4,711 posts)Horrendous, just a horrendous failure of political strategy. Just from a standpoint of pure political analysis, this is an own-goal of breathtaking proportions.

(598 posts)Bill was called the first black president many times in the 90s because he was treated very badly in his term. All the fake scandals and fake outrage at things the GOP did routinely. Clinton rules I think it was also called.

(52,166 posts)over Kennedy (for all of Nixon's many, many faults he was devoted to his wife and never had an affair) while Kennedy was just horrid in that regard. You would have presumedly voted for Hoover over FDR who died in his mistress' arms. Frankly, I don't think that is the right yardstick to use but mileage may vary.

(598 posts)African-American men seemed to understand it right away. Years ago, in the middle of the Whitewater investigation, one heard the first murmurs: white skin notwithstanding, this is our first black President. Blacker than any actual black person who could ever be elected in our children's lifetime. After all, Clinton displays almost every trope of blackness: single-parent household, born poor, working-class, saxophone-playing, McDonalds-and-junk-food-loving boy from Arkansas. And when virtually all the African-American Clinton appointees began, one by one, to disappear, when the Presidents body, his privacy, his unpoliced sexuality became the focus of the persecution, when he was metaphorically seized and body-searched, who could gainsay these black men who knew whereof they spoke? The message was clear: No matter how smart you are, how hard you work, how much coin you earn for us, we will put you in your place or put you out of the place you have somehow, albeit with our permission, achieved. You will be fired from your job, sent away in disgrace, andwho knows?maybe sentenced and jailed to boot. In short, unless you do as we say (i.e., assimilate at once), your expletives belong to us.

(11,101 posts)She gave it because of the way he was treated by the media, not because he was "much loved in the black community"
"People misunderstood that phrase, Morrison would later say. I said he was being treated like a black on the street, already guilty, already a perp.

applied there was indeed a black president, but
I am not well enough versed to know about
that time.
The question then is really: To whom did his
remark refer?

(271 posts)People began to confuse John Hanson, white and president for 1 year of the continental congress, and John Hanson, a black Liberian senator in the 1800s.

(4,711 posts)Honestly, if that's where you want to take this discussion, as if there is a fixed percentage of DNA characteristics that define a qualifying point for an ethnicity, knock yourself out. I think it's a distraction from the overall impact of Bill's ill-chosen choice of speech material, so I won't be participating.

(4,711 posts)Regardless of what "this is are", I'm not going to be gtfo'd by a double-digit post count. A double-digit post count in, what I might add, is a hotly contested primary with technically savvy campaign directors in play. I'll leave it to the reader to draw conclusions.

Jester Messiah
(4,711 posts)The unbelievable part here isn't that Bill was somehow saying that Obama isn't a "change-maker." It's that Obama is somehow not the first black president. Like "oh man, we're all at least -kinda- black, if you take it down to genetics." I mean, there might be a scientific argument there, but culturally? Nope. And that's where the shock and amazement comes from.
Beacool
(30,250 posts)It's from the NY Post.
Jester Messiah
(4,711 posts)Honestly, I'm not getting your objection, but I'm willing to entertain the notion that I'm just being thick here. To reiterate, it's not about the "change-maker" remarks, it's the whole "Obama's not _really_ the first black president" thing that has me marveling here. Maybe explain to me and the other slow children why what you linked has a bearing here?
