We were in prison, behind barbed wire fences, for four years, for the duration of the war, simply because we happened to look like the people that bombed Pearl Harbor. We were American citizens, yet, because of who we were, what we looked like, we were in prison, without due process.
Stop right now and imagine a five-year old George Takei, in prison. That was America seventy years ago. It may make you cry, at least a little. It did me.
But, we have, as an Asian-American community, low voter registration, Takei states. Weve got to be actively involved in the electoral process. And if you really appreciate the price that has been paid, for that right, you should be in there participating, protecting our interests, and, in so doing, making our democracy a truer democracy.
We have a unique opportunity to support a president who is a part of us. He grew up in Hawaii, the Aloha spirit, his sisters half-Asian. he understands, and loves, the Asian-American community.

(40,416 posts)I love the story of Martin Luther King Jr. contacting her to convince her to stay with Star Trek. It is a great story about how Gene Roddenberry saw the program. He would never let Nichelle down. And he didn't. The end result is Ms. Nichols never let us down either.
Bless her.
And George Takei, too.
Nichelle Nicols, George Takei & Walter Koenig were 3 of the only racial minorities on t.v. in the 1960's and provided a lot of inspiration to millions of people.
Whoopi Goldberg (who ended up appearing in ST: TNG as Guinan) has said that Nichelle Nichols inspired her growing up. And many young Asian-American men have said the same thing about watching George Taeki.
And Walter Koenig as Chekov was Roddenberry's statement that not all Russians were evil, diabolical Soviets trying to destroy the world the way McCarthy, the Pentagon, CIA & military-industrial complex wanted us to believe.

(13,776 posts)George is a wonderful, hilarious guy. Of course he'd endorse Obama.
But I didn't know that the Asian-American community as a whole weren't big voters or weren't registered to vote in big numbers. I'd have thought their rate of participation was high, if anything, given what happened to American citizens of Asian descent during WWII. I hope there's enough time for him to influence them to register, and once they're registered, to vote.
