Palm Beach Post Staff Writer

PORT ST. LUCIE —

With a crowd of 13,000 pumped up by Mitt Romney’s performance in last week’s presidential debate, the applause lines came easily for the GOP nominee and other speakers at a rally Sunday afternoon that capped a three-day Florida campaign swing.

Given the task of inspiring a sun-baked and rain-threatened overflow crowd that waited for hours to see Romney at Tradition Square, Florida Chief Financial Officer Jeff Atwater drew loud cheers by simply opening with the question: “How about that debate?”

U.S. Rep. Allen West, R-Palm Beach Gardens, got more roars by putting the debate in characteristically Westian terms.

“What you saw Wednesday night is when the opportunity society takes the stage with the dependency society, the opportunity society wins,” West declared.
