2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumBernie Sanders Raised $16 Million From the Unemployed
Theyre one of his biggest sources of fundraising.
One of Bernie Sanders talking points on the campaign trail is that the real unemployment rate is much higher than the official 4.9% cited by the Labor Department, and he should know.
Thats because Sanders biggest source of fundraising support comes from the retired or unemployed, according to filings with the Federal Election Commission, as reported by Bloomberg.
$16 million of the $73 million the candidate raised in 2015 came from individual donors who said they were without jobs, according to the report.

(12,754 posts)One measures only people actively looking for work -- that's about 4.9 percent
The second measures discouraged workers, no longer actively looking for work -- who have been unemployed for less than a year. That's about 10 percent.
The third measures discouraged people who have been unemployed for more than a year. That's about 23 percent.
But of course, politicians don't get to pat themselves on the back for saying that real unemployment is 23 percent.

(26,549 posts)U1, U2, U3, U4, U5 and U6 all use different metrics. Then there's the workforce participation rate.
Again, are you claiming a retired person is employed? No? Then they're unemployed. So's my wife, who's staying at home to care for our kids.
"Unemployed" does not only mean the people who fall into U3.

Do you honestly think explaining that during a general election campaign will be helpful?
If you're explaining, you're losing.

(26,549 posts)What, specifically, needs explaining?
Are you arguing that unemployed people are not allowed to donate to political campaigns now?
