"Mitt Romney said Tuesday he has no plans to push for legislation limiting abortion, a softer stance from a candidate who has said he would "get rid of" funding for Planned Parenthood and appoint Supreme Court who would overturn Roe v. Wade.
Theres no legislation with regards to abortion that Im familiar with that would become part of my agenda, the Republican presidential nominee told The Des Moines Register in an interview.
"The Romney campaign walked back the remark within two hours of the Register posting its story. Spokeswoman Andrea Saul told the National Review Online's Katrina Trinko that Romney "would of course support legislation aimed at providing greater protections for life."
"His statement could put him at odds with congressional Republicans who have made limiting abortion central to their messages. His own running mate, Rep. Paul Ryan (R-Wis.), has introduced bills to restrict access to abortion. And the Republican Party platform toughened its anti-abortion stance earlier this year."

"UPDATE: 7:45 p.m. -- The Democratic National Committee posted video later on Tuesday of Romney saying during a February interview that he would cut Planned Parenthood funding, block foreign aid from going to abortions and appoint Supreme Court Justices to overturn Roe v. Wade. "

(4,551 posts)He uses this trick all the time - put out something to appear moderate, and then walk it back later so as not to offend the right-wingers.
And he gets away with it because the media is not willing to call him out as a pathological liar.

(53 posts)Put out there to the moderate and independent swing voters that he's not like the extremes of his party, he's a moderate centrist, and then retract it when he thinks they aren't paying attention. How most people seem so intellectually unable to see right through his horseshit and that pathetic, condescending look of empathy that he uses in ads and during the debate is baffling, at best.

(5,052 posts)He delivers different messages to different audiences. He assumes most Americans are too stupid or too lazy to catch him. If he is in front of a moderate mainstream audience he delivers a mainstream message. His campaign will then quickly release a targeted message to his conservative base reassuring them of his severely conservative beliefs.
He is not stupid, he is cynical - he assumes voters are stupid.
