(34,648 posts)I study my history and white history and the history of all immigrants and movements, art, politics, film, whatever. I am informed. It is up to them to inform themselves they are adults now. No excuse not to know or learn their Subjects. Nobody is going to hold their hands and stop them from making huge mistakes. And harassing civil rights icons of color is a mistake if the votes of our group are NEEDED.

(14,733 posts)And hope that's enough. Anybody that wants to vote differently, that's their business. I always tell folks to vote their own self-interest. If we all did that, the 1%ers would have a hell of a lot less power and influence.

(20,234 posts)And she could have so easily done it graciously.
Instead of letting her original false accusations stand, and quietly tweaking the story in subsequent accounts without acknowledging the lie/mistake, she could have gotten through this with her reputation unharmed. All she had to do was say "I looked at the video, and in the heat, chaos and excitement of the moment I misinterpreted what happened. The rules prohibited a partisan translator, when that was pointed out, the moderator asked me to step down to be in compliance with the rules. I originally said that Bernie supporters demanded that the event would be in English only - and that was entirely incorrect - they actually tried to provide a translator as well."
People would have laid off if she'd done that instead of pulling a Capehart.

On the other hand, Bernie's trip to Washington to watch Dr. King give a speech, organizing a sit-in and getting arrested and fined $25 50 years ago completely immunizes him from even the suggestion that he has not "fought for civil rights his entire life."

(11,243 posts)She is a great warrior for justice. Someone who put her life and body on then line for what she believes in. And a feminist too. I gotta know more now.
Sad that she is taking flak. In politics-land, some things you should let go. This was one the Bern camp should have let die on it's own. Dunno who is right or wrong, but better not to fight against social justice legends. The optics are always bad on that. But oh well.... At least I got to learn about her. I will find a biography to read too.
I was born in Cali too, Oakland specifically, but moved away when I was still a kid. Still have fam there. Such a beautiful state and such a rich social history....

EffieBlack
(14,249 posts)But many of us, including me, resent being told that he has been fighting for civil rights his whole life, when that's just not true. There's a wide gulf between being supportive of civil rights and fighting for civil rights.
And whatever anyone thinks of him, he DID move to Vermont. I have no idea why he move there, but when he had a choice to make, he chose to move to a part of the country where there were very few people of color. Not the necessarily the behavior of a racist or bigot (and there is no reason to think that Bernie is either) but it's also not the choice of someone who is down with fighting for the cause of civil rights for minorities.
Chakab
(1,727 posts)exact number of years of Sanders' life that were spent fighting for civil rights or the very fact of residence in Vermont supposed to be any more offensive than the fact that Hillary took a giant shit on black America in the last election cycle when it became politically expedient to do so?
When you can find me tape of Bernie talking about how he moved to Vermont because he's always enjoyed the company of "hard working white Americans," I might take you seriously.

Pointing that out is not bullying. Nobody gets a free pass for dishonest behavior.
Nobody.
I'm not going to debate this again. The case against her is blatant.
I do not give a damn what she has done in the past. She cannot get up on a stage and deceive people about a man's record and then turn around and say "you can't call me out or criticize me for lying because a few years ago, I was a great leader for civil rights"
It's doesn't work that way. Doing something good doesn't give someone a license to turn around and lie for the rest of their life.

(283 posts)is that we all recognize that her legacy was compromised a long time ago. The attacks on Sanders follow a pattern and it is kind of ironic that Huerta used the same attack on the President in 2008. Actually, Huerta also became not only close with the Clintons but with the very white very bourgeois bunny tail Gloria Steinem who said the ridiculous statement in 2008 of gender being more important than race which is patently absurd since these factors all inter-animate together ... it is not only race it is social class, ethnicity, language, region, age cohort, religion, and on and on that create a world view or perspective. Nevertheless, rather than looking at Latin Times I think you ought to be looking at the very even handed reporting done in Latino Rebels and the comments and history of donations to her foundation and the radio interview http://www.latinorebels.com/2016/02/21/dolores-huertas-english-only-moment-at-caucus-what-happened-last-night-in-las-vegas/
Even more interesting was an online journal which seems well sourced that has been making the rounds with people in the know the past couple of days https://siglodelucha.wordpress.com/2014/11/17/the-politics-of-opportunism-and-capitulation-the-myth-of-dolores-huerta/ Please read it very carefully it will explain to you the history of what happened ....
The question is who are the people who keep posting this same silly story. To say that our children don't know who heroes and heroines are is disingenuous to say that they understand power relations, self-interest and how power corrupts does not transform their accomplishments ....
A very simple example is how this works it is the Clintonian playbook precisely take an icon who owes you a favor and have them come out for you and blast Sanders civil and union rights record. And then walk it back slowly and quietly without the press picking up on it ... For example Huerta said something about the 2007 bill which is a blatant lie because the unions were against the bill as well as other immigration activist groups like LULAC because it proposed the use of day labor (aka slave labor) which is not unconscionable. Note: Huerta did not say a thing about the overthrow of the President of Honduras precipitated by Clinton or what she did when she stood looking at children who were refugees in cages being sent back to certain death. I suppose that is because Americans have very short historic memories. Now you are telling me that Luis Gutierrez is an Immigration champion or Xican@ Latino Mexican-American rights champion? Really? Who did he support for mayor in Chicago? How does his ratings score next to Senator Sanders (Sanders scores higher) and interestingly he is an American since he is Puerto Rican. So it is not a question of immigration from Puerto
Rico to the US. However, when you look at Xican@ Congresspeople like Raul Grijalva from embattled Arizona and Salazar from Colorado guess what they both support Sanders. And, young people our hope in Nevada for Congress Lucy Flores is supporting Senator Sanders.
I am not saying that Huerta or Lewis are not historically iconic but I have said this before their iconic status does not make them saints they are human. I implore you to read the 2 articles that I connected you to ... they are important reads.

She KNEW that wasn't true.
She was being "shouted down", b/c they wanted an IMPARTIAL translator, not a Clinton shill and NO ONE shouted English Only. When no impartial translator could be found, the moderator said English Only.
She re-told this story (not realizing there was video) in a way that completely distorted reality and was an obvious lie.
