Black Lives Matter Activists Interrupt Hillary Clinton At Private Event In South Carolina
They wanted her to account for some of her past statements on racial justice.
02/24/2016 10:36 pm ET | Updated 40 minutes ago
Two Black Lives Matter activists interrupted a private Hillary Clinton fundraising event Wednesday night in Charleston, South Carolina.
Youth activist Ashley Williams demanded that the Democratic presidential candidate account for inconsistencies in her record on race, specifically around comments she made about crime in 1996.
Williams said she and a colleague, whom she did not identify, contributed $500 to attend the Clinton event, which was held at a private residence and was attended by around 100 guests.
Williams said she and her colleague strategically placed themselves at the front of the crowd and waited until Clinton appeared. Speakers introducing Clinton around 9:30 p.m. Wednesday night discussed Walter Scott, the Charleston A.M.E. Church shooting and how Clinton had a strong record of racial justice.
As Clinton spoke to the crowd, Williams stood to her side and held a sign quoting controversial statements Clinton made in 1996 in reference to at-risk youth, when she said "we have to bring them to heel."

There is no limit. Anything is possible. The middle class has so little today, but when you centralize everything they have into one spot you realize how much they still have left to steal.
With the current Congress ratio and Hillary at the head it will be easy pickings.

(8,352 posts)Let me speak, and you listen. Hiss, booing, "you are tresspassing."
Come on Clinton supporters, where are you? Seriously, get the fuck in this thread and give her credit. I mean y'all attack Sanders mercilessly when young women actually shoved him at an event that wasn't even his to headline. This young lady paid to attend a Clinton event. She never touched Clinton. She demonstrated exactly what the best of non-violent activism is about. Clinton was arrogant and condescending. The crowd was harsh and demonstrated their white privilege.
So come on!
Cassiopeia
(2,603 posts)Well, that's how you deal with that shit.
If you're a Clinton that is.
Williams said when Clinton paused and looked at her sign, she asked the former secretary of state to apologize to black people for mass incarceration. The mostly white audience yelled at Williams and told her she was being rude, she said.
"I wanted to bring her to confront her own words," Williams told The Huffington Post after the protest, adding, "We did this because we wanted to make sure that black people are paying attention to her record, and we want to know what Hillary we are getting."
Williams said the Secret Service threw her out out of the event.
MaggieD
(7,393 posts)And as she has demonstrated in the past, I'm sure Clinton would have had a dialogue with her if she wanted that. But clearly she didn't. So she got to say her peace and then it was time to leave.

Are people making the (racist) assumption that gangs are only comprised of AA people? Every race has gangs in urban areas. It's hardly specific to AAs.
loyalsister
(13,390 posts)The "black on black crime" meme grew out of the belief that gangs are predominately black. If someone refers to an individual as a "gang banger" what image do you think most people (especially white people in the suburbs) will imagine?
To this day, the word "gang" is a dog whistle. Denying that is just dishonest.

--the mass incarceration of way disproportional numbers of black youth and men, on minor drug offenses (that whites were largely NOT going to jail for), keeping them in our dangerous, destructive, non-rehabilitative prisons for very long sentences--often private corporate prisons some of whom have donated to Clinton's current campaign; destroying their future lives, giving them lifetime police records, making them ineligible for student loans, ineligible for public housing, ineligible for food stamps, and depriving them of their right to vote!--all as the result of the Clintons' great escalation of the corrupt, murderous, failed U.S. "war on drugs."
No. 2: When white people call teen offenders "super predators," that is code for black. They are NOT talking about white "super predator" children! Black people know this. I know this. Any whites who have experience of black lives--friends, family--or even just do a bit of reading, knows this. You might try to be a little more sensitive, with your "FACT."
If it hadn't been for the follow-up by the Clintons--including the profiteering off of the destruction of black families and black communities all over this country--I might be inclined to give Clinton the benefit of the doubt, that she didn't mean black. Tone deaf, maybe, but not intentional.
But it is the follow-up that defines the meaning. She was going to use poor blacks, struggling to eke out a living-- who fell into drug use or the drug market by the evaporation of American jobs due to the Clintons' NAFTA--for building a personal fortune from the REAL "super predators"--Goldman Sachs, et al. For instance, the manufacturing corporations they were trading in, in their Big Casino, were paying workers $1/day or 35 cents/day wherever they could get away with it, leaving devastated communities all over the USA, both white and black, but black communities took the hardest of hard hits. And "to bring them to heel," police departments were militarized, given the "war on drugs" as an excuse, and who did they go after? Black kids and men.
Latinos also suffered mass incarceration in the same way. They got hit by NAFTA in two or more countries. NAFTA and associated destructive economic policies began destroying agriculture in Mexico, for instance, which decimated many small towns and villages. Families here with relatives in Mexico had to deal with joblessness and poverty in both places, which in Mexico included loss of small plots of land used for sustenance food. Those people began migrating north and their poverty had to be absorbed by relatives and communities here. And on top of this, some Latino kids and men also fell into drug use and/or drug markets to try to make a living in these desperate conditions. They, too, were way disproportionately jailed, often for minor offenses, with long sentences and permanent records.
It's still going on and Clinton supports it all, and it supports her!
Both groups, black and Latino, are often framed, often picked up for nothing, often brutalized for nothing, and almost never have adequate legal counsel. And we are seeing the "end game" of these policies in the outright shooting to death of innocent black youths and men for no reason at all!
