(15,480 posts)Top Clinton adviser sent 'top secret' messages to her private account
Jake Sullivan both initiated email conversations and forwarded along messages with sensitive information, sources say.

Hillary Clinton's top national security and foreign policy staffer Jake Sullivan was one of the authors of messages that appeared on several Hillary Clinton email chains recently labeled "top secret" by the State Department, according to multiple intelligence sources who have seen the correspondence.
Sullivan, then deputy chief of staff to the secretary of state, is now senior policy adviser to the 2016 Democratic front-runner. Sullivans lawyer Beth Wilkinson did not respond to a request for comment.

(1,090 posts)and we interfere with world affairs a lot, but doesn't it bother anyone here that so many of our politicians are raising money from outsiders? And Hilliary is so blatant about it? like it is "no big deal everyone dose it?" Maybe it's just me.

(15,480 posts)As included on the Clinton campaign website inviting people to these functions,
By clicking "Donate," I certify that:
I am a U.S. citizen or lawfully admitted permanent resident of the U.S.
So anyone who pays into one of these campaign events is supposed to be a U.S. citizen.
Only American citizens (and immigrants with green cards) can contribute to federal politics, but the American divisions of foreign companies can form political action committees (PACs) and collect contributions from their American employees. Here's an indication of the foreign-connected interests behind these PACs, based on the headquarters of their parent companies. Click on a continent to see country-by-country detail.

What bothers me is the foreign countries' contributions to the Clinton Foundation in exchange for sweet weapons deals approved by the State Department when she was SOS.

(21,786 posts)London is a global financial centre, as much or more than NYC. There are thousands of US citizens working in the City of London for multinational corporations in the finance sector. US citizens residing abroad (unlike the citizens of pretty much every other country on earth) continue to be US taxpayers (so there isn't even any question of the issues around David Cameron's reliance on the "non-dom" (ie not a UK taxpayer) Lord Ashcroft). It's not legal for a candidate to solicit campaign contributions from non-citizens, nor is it legal for non-US citizens to contribute to a campaign.
I am not a fan of Hillary and am not voting for her in the primary, but as a US citizen residing in the UK, I don't see this as an issue and find the attitude of some people about US citizens who live abroad weird and unpleasant.

(15,480 posts)For example, I live in Pennsylvania. The vast majority of Pennsylvanians are very unhappy with all the fracking - and to add insult to injury, we are the only state with fracking which does not charge the Frackers an extraction tax. Our new Dem. governor ran on the promise to impose this tax but our state legislature - GOP majority in both chambers - has totally blocked it.
Recently Hillary was caught, i.e,. photographed with her Secret Service contingent and handlers being snuck in the back door of a Philadelphia fundraiser with Big Energy execs. And that was back to back with another fundraiser for Big Finance. Although the press is barred from these, we do get coverage of the fact, number, admission costs, etc. and will see photos of her (or Bill) swanning in and out of these gatherings. But I'd heard/read nothing about her foreign fundraising. Wonder if she's pursuing Americans abroad in other countries.
These fundraisers illustrate the volume of quid pro quos Hillary is marketing, and what debts/favors she'll owe if she gets to the Oval Office, and are therefore newsworthy wherever they are held. It is surprising and shocking to find out she will go so far as across the pond in pursuit of U.S. citizens to raise funds.
And if you read my earlier posts in this thread, I made quite clear the limits on soliciting campaign funds from non U.S. citizens/corporate interests.
I haven't run into the attitude you describe re Americans living abroad. I would love to be able to work and live in London - or Edinburgh or Dublin or Berlin for that matter. A couple of years ago, I would have included Paris, but things are rather dicey there right now. I envy my cousin who has retired to beautiful San Miguel de Allende in Mexico. I do know some Americans who are so insecure they are frightened at the mere prospect of even vacationing abroad. Pity them. Hope you are enjoying the opportunity/experience wherever you are in the UK.
Hillary Clinton Doing Back-to-Back Finance Industry Fundraisers Just Before Iowa

"......Clinton will appear in Philadelphia at a gala fund-raiser hosted by executives at Franklin Square Capital Partners, a $17 billion investment fund. Rocker Bon Jovi will reportedly play an acoustic set for friends who pledge $1,000 and hosts who bundle up to $27,000.
The Philadelphia Inquirer notes that Franklin Square employs Ivy League-educated money managers and salespeople with experience at big Wall Street firms plus four personal trainers and a dietitian to keep staff happy and productive amid the gym, yoga and nap rooms, Sol LeWitt art installations, and fancy cafeteria.
Clinton will then head to New York City, where she will speak at a lunchtime Conversations With Hillary fund-raiser. This one is co-hosted by Matt Mallow, a senior managing director and general counsel at BlackRock, the worlds largest asset management firm. As weve reported before, having a conversation with Hillary is not cheap.

(15,480 posts)Clinton Campaign to Host Fundraisers in Mexico
The former secretary of state will not herself take part in the two events, which are slated to be held in Mexico City one day after the New Hampshire primary vote, The Hill reported Tuesday. Her campaign treasurer, Jose Villarreal, will instead host the events.
Ivan Zapien, a Wal-Mart lobbyist who relocated to Mexico along with the company in 2015, will also be present to co-host the fundraising dinner. Alejandra Rangel Smith, an academic from Mexico, will be in charge of the fundraising breakfast at her house.
According to the Hill, Mexico City is not a common destination for hopefuls interested in overseas fundraisers. The donors are required to assert that they are US citizens.
Another Clinton fundraiser is reportedly set to be held thousands of miles away in London by Clintons daughter, Chelsea, and fashion editor Anna Wintour.

Dishwashers for Clinton
Once again, a zeal for campaign cash trumps common sense.
This appears to be another instance in which a Clinton campaigns zeal for campaign cash overwhelms its judgment. After the fundraising scandals of President Bill Clintons 1996 reelection campaign, the dangers of vacuuming cash from a politically inexperienced immigrant community should have been obvious. But Ms. Clintons money machine seized on a new source of cash in Chinatown and environs. As the Times reported, a single Chinatown fundraiser in April brought in $380,000. By contrast, 2004 Democratic presidential nominee John F. Kerry raised $24,000 from Chinatown in the course of his entire campaign.

Clintons Campaign ContributionsChinese Communist Candidate?
High Maintenance Hillary / An unlikely treasure-trove of donors for Clinton
As with other campaigns looking for dollars in unpromising places, the Clinton operation also has accepted what it later conceded were improper donations. At least one reported donor denies making a contribution. Another admitted to lacking the legal-resident status required for giving campaign money.
The Times examined the cases of more than 150 donors who provided checks to Clinton after fundraising events geared to the Chinese community. One-third of those donors could not be found using property, telephone or business records. Most have not registered to vote, according to public records.
And several dozen were described in financial reports as holding jobs including dishwasher, server or chef that would normally make it difficult to donate amounts ranging from $500 to the legal maximum of $2,300 per election.

Those references to Bill Clinton's campaign? PRC refers to Peoples Republic of China. And here's what that's about:
INVESTIGATION OF ILLEGAL OR IMPROPER ACTIVITIES
IN CONNECTION WITH 1996 FEDERAL ELECTION CAMPAIGNS
FINAL REPORT of the COMMITTEE ON GOVERNMENTAL AFFAIRS
SENATE Rept. 105-167 105th Congress 2d Session March 10, 1998
From its earliest stages, the Committees investigation
uncovered instances of political contributions made with
foreign money. Either contributing or soliciting this money
have been individuals with business or political ties to the
PRC, who have escorted PRC officials and businessmen to
meetings with President Clinton and Vice President Gore, and
who have otherwise facilitated efforts to shape United States
policy towards China. The intelligence portion of the
Committees investigation sought to determine whether the
foreign contributions and the PRC ties were mere coincidence,
or if the PRC was in some way behind any foreign political
contributions.
Information obtained by the Committee reveals close ties
between the PRC and many of the individuals who produced or
facilitated foreign campaign contributions. And these
individualsTed Sioeng, Maria Hsia, John Huang, and James and
Mochtar Riadyinteracted with one-another with some frequency.
Their paths appear to have crossed most often when they were
engaged in fund- raising or contributing money to the
Democratic National Committee.
Ted Sioeng.11 The Committee has learned that Sioeng
worked, and perhaps still works, on behalf of the Chinese
government. Sioeng regularly communicated with PRC embassy and
consular officials at various locations in the United States,
and, before the campaign finance scandal broke, he traveled to
Beijing frequently where he reported to and was briefed by
Chinese communist party officials.
http://www.fas.org/irp/congress/1998_rpt/sgo-sir/2-18.htm1996 United States campaign finance controversy
The 1996 United States campaign finance controversy was an alleged effort by the People's Republic of China to influence domestic American politics prior to and during the Clinton administration and also involved the fund-raising practices of the administration itself.
While questions regarding the U.S. Democratic Party's fund-raising activities first arose over a Los Angeles Times article published on September 21, 1996,[1] China's alleged role in the affair first gained public attention when Bob Woodward and Brian Duffy of The Washington Post published a story stating that a United States Department of Justice investigation into the fund-raising activities had uncovered evidence that agents of China sought to direct contributions from foreign sources to the Democratic National Committee (DNC) before the 1996 presidential campaign. The journalists wrote that intelligence information had shown the Chinese embassy in Washington, D.C. was used for coordinating contributions to the DNC[2] in violation of United States law forbidding non-American citizens or non-permanent residents from giving monetary donations to United States politicians and political parties. A Republican investigator of the controversy stated the Chinese plan targeted both presidential and congressional United States elections, while Democratic Senators said the evidence showed the Chinese targeted only congressional elections. The Chinese government denied all accusations.
