Why a Hillary Clinton victory begins in South Carolina

After a surprise dead heat in nearly-all-Caucasian Iowa and her wipeout in even-whiter New Hampshire, supporters of former secretary of state Hillary Clinton have been citing South Carolina for months as her impregnable “firewall.” A narrow victory for Clinton in Nevada last Saturday only made it more imperative that she sweep the black vote down here. Sen. Bernie Sanders, it is widely said, will only be successful among voters of colour if the colour of the voters is pink.

“Put me down for Hillary,” Sheryl Rutling says.

“Because you are a woman?” she is asked. “Because you are black?”

“Because we are a country of Americans,” Rutling replies.

Hillary sounds extremely condescending and her pivot to "now let's talk about issues I think matter" as the woman was escorted out - bad form.

the internet has a tendency to blow things out of proportion and the public has a short memory.

and the Childrens Defense Fund. They know her and her history of working on their behalf. She is not a Bernie-come-lately to South Carolina. Her support there is solid as a rock.

Outside of DU people really took notice. That was a solid victory and will generate momentum. It changed a lot of the conversation being held in the media. Even with respect to reporters directly confronting Sanders himself about it. Sanders supporters have attempted to redefine everything in this election. It is now that a huge win doesn't come with momentum. It's laughable. We have a solid primary going on but Clinton has her springboard out of Nevada.

She's had some bumps in the road and is facing a strong challenge from Mr. Sanders, but there is little doubt: she will be the nominee.
