2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumFor the "They'll get in line" folks...
There's something that is seriously being under appreciated when I hear this come from posters on this site and that's the kind of mental leap it will take for some Sanders supporters to vote for Hillary.
Sanders and Clinton are running two very different campaigns. Sanders supporters are quite passionate about a few things, among others:
- Getting money out of politics
- Consistent messaging
- Going hard against the Republicans
Hillary isn't necessarily the paragon of these virtues (Incrementalism is, in many opinions, not he best way to go head to head against Republican obstruction). For people struggling to support her it will come down to sacrificing some core principles. That's a big deal!
Myself, I'm a Sanders supporter. I will have to cement my nose shut in order to vote for Hillary in the fall should I be forced to. Every passing day as she and her campaign (not supporters, can't judge a candidate by its supporters, it's not right) get slimier, it gets harder. There needs to be a serious outreach beyond yelling "SUPREME COURT!" to show some appreciation of what Sanders has done and worked for.

(30,481 posts)I expect people to vote in the countries best interests. Some will vote in their own best interests. And some won't vote.
Who woulda thunk it.
This is probably the easiest primary ever for me to decide. Once O'Malley didn't gain traction, it was Clinton all the way. I'll still vote for Sanders, even with my great reservations, if he is victorious in the primary.

But, the majority of Democrats will vote for the Democrat. It'll happen.

(1,545 posts)I supported Teddy, I got in line for Jimmy Carter.
I supported Hart, I got in line for Mondale.
I supported Dean, I got in line for Kerry.
I supported Hillary, I got in line for Barack Obama.
My self image is not as important as the well being of the nation.

(4,387 posts)...it's about what she represents vs Sanders. They're extremely different in regards to methodology, rhetoric, and campaign style. It can be a big leap for people to move, what they consider, backwards.
Ask yourself this: What do you lose with a Sanders nomination? Would you have to give up anything to vote for him? What does he stand for that you don't agree with?
I bet that list is far shorter going from Clinton to Sanders than it is the other way around.

(1,545 posts)And if Bernie is the nominee, I will put aside my concerns that he would be a disaster as both a candidate and, if by some miracle he is elected, as a president, vote for him and hope for the best.
I don't see why I should expect less from Sanders supporters than I am willing to agree to myself.

(46,436 posts)in swing states would be foolish, but in states that are clearly Republican or clearly Democratic, a person should be able to vote their conscience without being bullied about it. I still have no regrets about my Nader vote (gasp!) in 2000 because Alaska wasn't going to vote for Al Gore that year anyway. My vote made not one iota of difference.
