4 Times 2016 Presidential Hopefuls Were Ordered by Musicians to Cease and DesistBikini Kill is the latest band to demand candidates stop turning its songs into propaganda.
~Snip~
1. Hillary Clinton, Rebel Girl? Punk rock legend Tobi Vail, founding member of Bikini Kill, sent a copyright infringement complaint to YouTube over use of the Song "Rebel Girl" in a pro-Clinton advertisement made by two of the former Secretary of States supportersthe California-based couple Eric Wing and Stacey Sampo. In the video, footage of Clinton from the '90s to the present is overlaid with the song whose lyrics blare: When she walks, the revolution's coming."
The advertisement had already raised eyebrows. After Clinton campaign head John Podesta tweeted the video, one Daily Kos blogger argued that a rebel girl "does not serve on Walmarts board of directors and stay silent as it viciously attacks unions A 'rebel girl' does not submit to the military-industrial complex and cast votes for unnecessary wars.
Vail, whose social media account indicates she is a strong Bernie Sanders supporter, told the publication Death and Taxes that she sent the complaint because we dont authorize use of our songs in advertisements. She explained, Bikini Kill is a collective, we collectively own our entire catalog including songwriting, so in order for a song to be used they need to have the permission of the whole band.

(2,672 posts)Great article on Lars Ulrich and Napster.
When I was just a wee lad growing up in San Diego, I remember being shown a new service called Napster. Oh, what a glorious invention this was. One could go online, find a song, and it just twenty short minutes, that song could be yours for free. I knew that music would never be the same and I couldnt wait to see what the future would hold.
Little did I know that the future included dumb-ass Lars Ulrich sailing in on his doucheboat with his crew of lawyers, ready to wipe out all of the evil 15-year-old pirates who dare steal this captains music. YARRRR!!!!! Sorry. Ill stop with all of the pirate talk Ok, one more: YARRRR!!!!!!
Anyway, I got to thinking lately that Lars didnt really handle the situation well. For that matter, the music industry didnt either. The invention of Napster would eventually lead to iTunes, Rhapsody, Pandora, Spotify, Band Camp plus the proliferation of mp3 players like the iPod, the evolution of cell phones and the eventual rise of the iPhone. Every single one of those has had a huge impact on how we listen to music today.

(7,661 posts)I was a part of Napster when it first started and still have many of my MP3s on a hard drive. I never made money or bootleg copies I just enjoy music and was shocked when I was told by Metallica to delete the MP3 or else. WTF man it was just one song lol.

A study indicated that with Napster, sales were increasing because it was giving artists more exposure.

(36,392 posts)on the subject. Chuck D believed that Napster was just 21st century radio, it would benefit the artists over time. Everyone knows what Lars's position was.

(4,762 posts)Most popular music is under compulsory license for broadcast, live performance, or cover recording. You can demand royalties but you can't prohibit the use of a song as the songwriter. Streaming media are under different rules, but an artist can't actually make a campaign stop using a recording of a song at rallies, for example, at least not under intellectual property law (possibly one can sue over implied endorsement).
Ask Chrissy Hynde, as Rush Limpballs has used her song for 20+ years as bumper music. She gets paid and it goes to PETA. She can't make him stop.

It was the equivalent of a fan film.
