2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumAs a Democrat and a citizen of the United States living in Washington state
I take great offense to this "its over" meme. After Saturday's vote, 96% of Democrats still have not voted. As a citizen and a Democrat, I have a right to vote and not be disenfranchised by a bunch of self-righteous assholes.
Not to mention that the largest population centers in the country and the only ones that matter in the winning of the General Election for a Democrat have not voted yet. With all due respect to my friends in the South, No Democratic Party victory is going to hinge of the vote in Georgia.
How about you let the voters living on the West coast have their say before screaming "victory".

(15,139 posts)voters in the states with the greatest number of electoral votes are unable to have their voices heard now. June is still 3 months away. Maybe a nationwide primary is the answer? Regardless, it's a sure bet that no one with a D after their name will win in the South in November.
LittleGirl
(8,291 posts)a nationwide primary is what I think is needed, just like the general only on one day, the same day for everyone. If nothing else, have a round two, a couple of months later. This spread of primary dates is awful and frustrating! That's how they do it in Europe. We need to adopt that too.

(27,840 posts)Frankly, I haven't really seen many people suggesting otherwise. It was a boon for the party in 2008, keeping voters engaged for a lot longer (and it probably encouraged new registrations, too).
I do wish Washington wasn't holding its caucus on Easter Weekend. I would have liked to have gone out of town for the weekend, but I won't be able to (yes, I know I can submit an affidavit for the first round of voting, but I want to be able to vote on the platform, too).

(17,505 posts)Ive seen Sanders declared "toast" ..... after Iowa!
LisaM
(27,840 posts)But I don't see a single thread asking Sanders to drop out (which is pretty much the opposite of how it was in 2008, when Obama supporters were enraged that Hillary dared stay in). I actually think it would be bad for either candidate to drop out now; not only does it disengage people in states where they vote later (and we're just talking a month or two, really), it will allow the networks to focus strictly on the Republicans, which I assume no one here wants. Certainly not me.
nadinbrzezinski
(154,021 posts)but that is by design... and I agree. In fact this should be be a NATIONAL election. But that is another discussion After the mess we are going to go though, it might happen.
rufus dog
(8,419 posts)Have 10 election nights. Take a state from each time zone plus one wildcard. Divide up the top ten states by Electorial votes so each primary night has one of the top ten. Space them every two weeks. Random draw for which states go first. Also weight the damn thing, for example California would be tied with Wyoming or Alabama so the least likely Dem win would be tied with the most likely.
Equitable, yes, but then us liberal states have an equal say in the outcome which is what the fuckers don't want. Thus Californians, the biggest mother fucking prize, gets June, while the South gets the prime spot. And yes as a Californian it pisses me off.
nadinbrzezinski
(154,021 posts)you want it earlier, PAY FOR IT. When the state tried in 2000 and 2004 it was way, way, way expensive.
For some odd reason the two parties don't want to. And the state is fine wiht it, keeping them away from the actual process... hell, at times I think some in the state would love to make the Secretary of State like all county Registrar ... a civil service post.
Of course if we went the WA route and had this as mail in only ballot, the state might be willing to go for an earlier primary. It would cut, by the back of envelope math, by about half
rufus dog
(8,419 posts)Gives the most conservative Democratic candidate the momentum. It would be like the Republicans having a Big 10 or Pac 12 Super Tuesday. Not going to happen, but the Dems happily go along with the SEC primary.
Sanders won more blue States tonight than Clinton, Hillary had impressive wins in Massachusetts and Virginia. The actual story is we have a contested race. But, by design, we have a story that Hillary is the overwhelming choice.
nadinbrzezinski
(154,021 posts)I am just explaining that CA tried in 2000 and 2004, and I mean the state, not the parties. The cost was very high, and the RoI (those two years super Tuesday was huge) was small regarding the influence for national elections,
The state, not the parties, is slowly moving the way of WA. So if they do, we are now into automatic registration at the DMV for example starting in 2017, and my county has a large majority do absentee. the STATE might try this again.
I feel the primary system is way broken, it is by design, it needs to be fixed. I'm just giving you the reason why we are not doing primaries earlier.

(4,558 posts)That's how many delegates are needed to clinch the Primary.
I differ from a number of my fellows in agreeing with you on that note. Of course, I am quite happy to see the success of the candidate I support going on tonight, but that doesn't blind me to the fact that it is not a completed race yet.
On the second point you made.. If we go by that, no Democratic victory is going to hinge on the vote in Washington, or Oregon, or California. Let's be honest, Sanders or Clinton will pull those states in a General.. You are right in as much as neither of them is likely to pull Georgia in a General. Alabama is also quite laughable. Texas (as much as I will work my ass off here to make it happen for either Hillary or Sanders) isn't a reality either.
Virginia on the other hand.. that one is rather important tonight. Virginia is going to be one of the critical swing states.. as will Florida, Ohio (hell No president has won without Ohio's electoral votes since Kennedy), Colorado, Nevada, Wisconsin, and North Carolina.
angrychair
(8,733 posts)I only disagree about CA, no Dem is going to win without CA or NY. On that note, without WA or OR, it is hard to pull enough EV to make a good win, unless you pull them from other sources like FL or IN or ND or some less-than-likely source.
I was campaigning for PBO in 2008 and 2012 in Virginia. It was a lot of fun and a lot of hard work. It was a lot of work but I question if HRC has the ability to win over VA like PBO did. Winning Virginia two cycles in a row was a unique accomplishment. It had a lot more to do with Obama than him just being a Democrat. He is an amazing man and people really want to like him. Don't see it in the cards for HRC , that likable factor just isn't there for her, I could be wrong though.
Amimnoch
(4,558 posts)From last night, the swing state results are the ones that i, personally was watching closest:
Virginia - Hillary, Colorado - Bernie
From before last night:
Iowa and Nevada are swingers, and will play a more important role in the General.
The other states, you can pretty much put money down on how they are going to perform in the General:
New Hampshire - Hillary or Bernie in the primary, NH is a (D) in the general.
South Carolina - Hillary or Bernie in the primary, SC is a (R) in the general.
Alabama - LOL
Arkansas - Being the Clinton home state, this one might actually be able to be a (D) if she's the candidate, but at only 6 electoral votes, it's not going to be a big player either way.
Georgia - (R)
Massachusetts - (D)
Minnesota - (D)
Oklahoma - (R)
Tennessee - (R)
Texas - (R)
Vermont - (D)
To be honest, I'm really most interested in seeing how Florida and Ohio (practically the 2 kingmaker states for decades now) goes. If Bernie ends up showing strong in those 2 states, I may actually switch over due to being more electable.
Note to others: I am not attacking any of the people in those states above. No, I'm not suggesting at all disenfranchising the Democratic voters in those states. I'm only stating that their numbers are, as a political reality, the strong minority in those states.

It saddens me that our longtime Progressive Rep. Jim McDermott has pledged for Hillary as a Superdelegate. I've called his office multiple times, urging him to at a minimum NOT commit at least until his constituents have voted. Nada Evasions only - sigh. Might help for others to call.
And our beloved (re-elected!) Socialist Seattle City Council Rep. Kshama Sawant has a wonderful piece up on the Huff Post today - well worth a read, fellow feminists! Unfortunately, that consevative rag, the Seattle Times, had the outrageously pro-Clinton NY Times article on their front page today... boy did the wordage make my blood boil! Basically said it's COMPLETELY over for Bernie at this point. I know that Sen. Patty Murray is up for re-election this year (and as Superdelegate is pledged to Hillary).
