Related: About this forumMotherJones: Hillary Clinton's Email Scandal Continues to Fade Away
Here's the latest on classified information being sent via email at the State Department:
Powell has said he has reviewed the messages and disagrees with a State Department decision to retroactively classify them. I do not see what makes them classified, he said.
Hillary Clinton probably sent a lot more emails the Powell, so she ended up with more emails retroactively being classified. Plus the CIA is apparently obsessed with pretending that the US drone program is a deep, dark secret. As usual with Clinton "scandals," this one is dribbling away to nothing in the light of day, and would undoubtedly dribble a lot faster if any of us could actually see the emails. It's an election season, so none of this will convince Republicans (*or Sanders supporters) that there's nothing of any consequence here, but there's nothing of any consequence here. It's just another boneheaded excrescence of the Benghazi pet rock.

Contrary to your wishful thinking, head in the sand post, with the granting of immunity to Pagliano, the investigation just accelerated.

(27,461 posts)it frames it as a GOP scandal and compares it to Benghazi. The problem is that like you say, and Kevin Drum omits, the FBI is investigating this, it's not just Trey Gowdy or Darrell Issa.
Let me add that when I saw this headline and saw the link to Mother Jones, I knew it was Kevin Drum. I suppose Drum's partisan writing has brought a lot of hits to Mother Jones, but they really have paid a price regarding their reputation.

(24,689 posts)The FOIA revealed there was classified information in the emails that were going to be released to the public. Every email had to be scrutinized and the classified information redacted. That doesn't mean anyone is guilty of anything.

(10,650 posts)So they could review classifications of documents for a FOIA request???? Get serious.
The FBI won't give out the targets of the investigation or the subject. That's SOP.
But Loretta Lynch said this: That matter is being handled by career independent law enforcement agents, FBI agents, as well as the career independent attorneys in the Department of Justice. They follow the evidence, they look at the law and theyll make a recommendation to me when the time is appropriate.
Now, you don't have to be a particularly bright to see that list is what you would get for any serious criminal inquiry. "...they look at the law..." should tell you all you need to know if you are truly interested in facts.
DCBob

'His remarks buttress the contention of former secretary of state Hillary Clinton that some of her emails have been retroactively subjected to over-classification.'
That's what this article is about. Exonerating Clinton, even though hundreds of emails that were classified or she should have known were classifiable went through an unsecure server, and 22 were extremely sensitive.
Kultursmog. "If Hillary did it, it's probably okay."
It's the server stupid, not individual emails, although they are evidence. It's the moving of all official communication away from government oversight for purposes of political viability and, most likely, criminality.
The Russians know. The Iranians know. The Chinese certainly know how much criminal activity Clinton engaged in. The question is, how much does the FBI know?

REASON FOR ALERT
This post is disruptive, hurtful, rude, insensitive, over-the-top, or otherwise inappropriate.
ALERTER'S COMMENTS
"The Chinese certainly know how much criminal activity Clinton engaged in." This is extremely inflammatory, insulting and a blatant regurgitation of RW attacks against the Clintons. We can disagree on issues, but we need to draw the line against RW attacks. I know the poster is a long time DU'er, but they should know better. What next, accuse Hillary of murdering Vince Foster?
You served on a randomly-selected Jury of DU members which reviewed this post. The review was completed at Sat Mar 5, 2016, 09:40 AM, and the Jury voted 3-4 to LEAVE IT.
Juror #1 voted to HIDE IT
Explanation: No explanation given
Juror #2 voted to LEAVE IT ALONE
Explanation: One can't possibly criticize her past without being accused of rw attacks. True or false, the rw attacks. Deal with it in the thread, rather than alerting.
Juror #3 voted to LEAVE IT ALONE
Explanation: No explanation given
Juror #4 voted to HIDE IT
Explanation: The last two sentences are why I am voting to hide this post.
Juror #5 voted to LEAVE IT ALONE
Explanation: Absurd alert. The alerter needs to have their alerting privileges revoked.
Dispute the point if you can (shouldn't be hard, since it is opinion stated as fact). But please don't try a slippery slope argument to Vince Foater when that is not what CoffeeCat has done.

(24,411 posts)If you take a look at the news and information regarding Clinton's email scandal--there is a concerted, coordinated effort to disseminate key messages to counter the damage this is causing HRC.
My guess is that the FBI granting immunity to the IT expert, Bryan Pagliano, is doing serious damage to her credibility on this issue. Or it's possible that Clinton's new messaging strategy is to blunt any soon-to-be-released information that Pagliano reveals during the course of the investigation.
The key messages are as follows:
--Powell did it too
--This is nothing but a right-wing hit job on poor Hillary
They will be hammering these points for the next several days. They'll use friendly reporters (Washington Post, for sure) and others in the MSM to help them repeat these talking points.
Anyone who dares to state otherwise will be attacked. Unfortunately, many people who don't know any better will pick up these talking points. It's all very interesting.
Edited to add: Or mocked! Mocking is very popular!

(6,282 posts)However it's still important to approach the situation with a healthy amount of recognition that we aren't privy to the private FBI investigation, so this thing could go many directions. I mean, saying things like "The Chinese certainly know how much criminal activity Clinton engaged in" are still unsubstantiated. Yes, her server was almost certainly compromised. But we don't really know for sure the Chinese hacked it. Yes, she almost certainly was involved in some kind of pay for play situation. But we can't say that for certain.
Hopefully the FBI investigation blows the doors off this one.

(80 posts)It is the same as Benghazi, because we have indicted and CONVICTED someone with no evidence. Please state where you get the information that hiding the TRUTH is priority number 1. I thought I noticed that her main priority was in winning primary votes around the country.

(10,130 posts)Investigators with the State Department issued a subpoena to the Bill, Hillary and Chelsea Clinton Foundation last fall seeking documents about the charitys projects that may have required approval from the federal government during Hillary Clintons term as secretary of state, according to people familiar with the subpoena and written correspondence about it.
The subpoena also asked for records related to Huma Abedin, a longtime Clinton aide who for six months in 2012 was employed simultaneously by the State Department, the foundation, Clintons personal office, and a private consulting firm with ties to the Clintons.
The full scope and status of the inquiry, conducted by the State Departments inspector general, were not clear from the material correspondence reviewed by The Washington Post.
The Clinton Foundation received $5 million or more from Saudi Arabia and Boeing after Boeing sold Saudi Arabia a bunch of F-15s while Hillary oversaw and approved the deal as Secretary of State. This was one of several such "coincidences" reported by the media of big donors to the Clinton Foundation also receiving help from the Secretary of State.
Can someone explain to me (& provide a link) which foundations of Condoleezza Rice and Colin Powell received $5 million or more from parties they helped during their time as Secretary of State and when their foundation got subpoenaed? Somehow I missed that report.
And somehow, this is all being swept under the rug as "just another Benghazi".
Another difference between Benghazi and this email scandal is that hundreds of FBI and Intelligence Community agents gawked at this email scandal for months. Why the fuck would they do that if there wasn't a serious good reason to make such a gargantuan effort?
This spin about "there's nothing to see here" is bullshit.
You'd have to be incredibly naive to believe that the donations to the Clinton Foundation are not going to come up in the general election. And to date, after nearly a year in the media, we haven't got a shred of solid evidence to clear her nor a good, credible answer from anyone. If you want to believe this is all magically going to go away, I'm sure someone could come up with some good swamp land to sell you.
If a solider falls asleep while on guard, whether someone attacks while he's on duty or not, they are subject to discipline - maybe a court martial or even death if the nation is at war.
Hillary setting up a server at home that held classified material (some of it born classified) is something like falling asleep while on duty to protect the nations classified secrets. It is against the law - period. No ifs, ands. buts or maybes about it. And the Republicans howling about it, as they inevitably will, will be on the side of criminal law. This is not going to get swept under the carpet either - even if Obama pardons her - there will be outrage. And quite frankly, there should be because it is blatantly against the law to take possession of classified material without authorization - her husband pardoned someone for doing it and it was profiled in the media so it's kind of hard to pretend nobody knew that law.
This is "let's pretend there isn't a problem and put it out there in the media we control so that people will continue to vote for us to clinch the primary ... after which, shit is likely to hit the fan but it's too late for the voters - they'll be stuck with Hillary as their candidate".
That's my take on what is going on here. Telling folks there isn't a problem is bullshit. Hillary will not walk into the Oval Office without getting hacked up in this gantlet. No chance of that.
this post that was critical of Hillary gets Alert but one it is replying to calling someone Stupid is OK. Freaking people are so GOP around here. Talk bad about the Oligarchy and you try to silence them.

"Former secretary of state Hillary Rodham Clinton appears to have operated in violation of what the White House said Tuesday was very specific guidance that members of the Obama administration use government e-mail accounts to carry out official business."

(24,411 posts)I agree with you that most people find Clinton's email scandal complicated and they often avoid tuning in and reading. I mean, who has time for that three-thousand word WaPol articles?
However, people do understand that the FBI granting immunity to the IT guy who set up HRC's server--is a big deal.
People "get" that. Very easy to understand.
When people start "getting" the details of the investigation, they begin paying attention and that can lead to damage.
My guess is that this Pagliano-immunity situation is problematic for Clinton. Maybe their internal polling is showing that this is damaging. With 69 percent untrustworthy numbers--that cut across all political lines--it doesn't take much to further erode her campaign.
The Clinton camp is certainly in PR overdrive--attempting to do damage control.
