Minn. redistricting would pit Bachmann, McCollum (bad news for Michele Bachmann)

This is bad news for Bachmann.

ST. PAUL, Minn. - A special court panel's new maps of Minnesota congressional districts would throw incumbent Reps. Michele Bachmann and Betty McCollum into the same district.

Bachmann, a Republican, currently represents the 6th District, while the Democrat McCollum is in the 4th. The redrawn maps put both in the 4th District.

It's not clear whether that will mean a general election matchup between the veteran members of Congress. Each could choose to run in another district since members of Congress don't have to live in the district they represent.

While congressional candidates need not live in the district they run to represent, state legislative candidates much reside in the district they want to represent for at least six months before the November 6 Election Day. That gives lawmakers and candidates until the first week in May to move into a new district if their current district is unappealing or has them matched against a legislative colleague.

And she has a reasonably good chance of winning. It encompasses most of her old district -- just not her home town.
