The AIDS crisis in the 80s was just awful, with Reagan doing absolutely nothing about it until the end of his term. Tens of thousands of people died way too soon as a result of inaction by the religious right and the Republican Party. Thank goodness in 1992 Bill Clinton got into office and openly embraced, appointed, and promoted gay rights. He wasn't perfect, but for the time he was a giant step in the right direction, and his efforts and the efforts of the Clinton Foundation today in the fight against AIDS are part of the reason that so many gays and gay rights organizations back Hillary.
