(29,798 posts)This excerpt from FDR's 1944 State of the Union helps define our situation by giving a benchmark for measuring which candidate is a true Democrat:
We have come to a clear realization of the fact that true individual freedom cannot exist without economic security and independence. "Necessitous men are not free men." People who are hungry and out of a job are the stuff of which dictatorships are made.
In our day these economic truths have become accepted as self-evident. We have accepted, so to speak, a second Bill of Rights under which a new basis of security and prosperity can be established for all regardless of station, race, or creed.
Among these are:
The right to a useful and remunerative job in the industries or shops or farms or mines of the Nation;
The right to earn enough to provide adequate food and clothing and recreation;
The right of every farmer to raise and sell his products at a return which will give him and his family a decent living;
The right of every businessman, large and small, to trade in an atmosphere of freedom from unfair competition and domination by monopolies at home or abroad;
The right of every family to a decent home;
The right to adequate medical care and the opportunity to achieve and enjoy good health;
The right to adequate protection from the economic fears of old age, sickness, accident, and unemployment;
The right to a good education.
All of these rights spell security. And after this war is won we must be prepared to move forward, in the implementation of these rights, to new goals of human happiness and well-being.
America's own rightful place in the world depends in large part upon how fully these and similar rights have been carried into practice for our citizens. For unless there is security here at home there cannot be lasting peace in the world.
One of the great American industrialists of our daya man who has rendered yeoman service to his country in this crisis-recently emphasized the grave dangers of "rightist reaction" in this Nation. All clear-thinking businessmen share his concern. Indeed, if such reaction should developif history were to repeat itself and we were to return to the so-called "normalcy" of the 1920'sthen it is certain that even though we shall have conquered our enemies on the battlefields abroad, we shall have yielded to the spirit of Fascism here at home.
I ask the Congress to explore the means for implementing this economic bill of rights- for it is definitely the responsibility of the Congress so to do. Many of these problems are already before committees of the Congress in the form of proposed legislation. I shall from time to time communicate with the Congress with respect to these and further proposals. In the event that no adequate program of progress is evolved, I am certain that the Nation will be conscious of the fact.
Our fighting men abroad- and their families at home- expect such a program and have the right to insist upon it. It is to their demands that this Government should pay heed rather than to the whining demands of selfish pressure groups who seek to feather their nests while young Americans are dying.
To compare and contrast John D. Rockefeller's view of how the world is supposed to be organized you could read this HistorydotCom review http://www.history.com/topics/john-d-rockefeller
Or you could just watch Hillary and Bill Clinton in action.

(5,764 posts)...is a big shift to the right from Obama. A bigger hawk! Someone who rather than just not thinking we CAN pass Single Payer makes the case to the nation AGAINST Single Payer so the country will NEVER support it! Who is finally willing to stand up and tell the country the GOP is right, all those social safety net programs liberals support are just giving away "free stuff" to people! And who knows that no payoff from Wall St is too much for a politician to receive! Especially if you keep what you gave them in return secret from the public because what they don't know won't hurt them!
Finally, someone who will get things done.
PROGRESS!!!!!!! YAY!!!!!! RIGHTWARD HO!!!!!

(5,764 posts)...and what color is the sky there?
She's one of the biggest Hawks in the Democratic Party. RIGHT.
She's actively *hostile* to Single Payer as a concept. RIGHT.
SHE has actively TRASHED the entire underlying principle of the progressive social safety net using GOP frames of how liberals just want to give away free stuff to people. RIGHT.
She is one of the most Wall St appeasing money taking Democrats there are. RIGHT.
What the hell primary have you been watching...or what *entire career* of Clinton's... that could possibly give you the impression she is left of Obama? Are you insane or is this just an attempt at humor?
DanTex
(20,709 posts)but on economic policy, she's more liberal. Even in 2008, her healthcare plan was more progressive than Obama's -- what Obama actually implemented was closer to Hillary's plan than to his own. And her 2016 platform is more liberal still.
She's no more hostile to single payer than Obama. And she's certainly not opposed to the safety net. On Wall Street, she wants to extend Dodd-Frank. She wants to raise taxes on the rich. She wants large expenditures on infrastructure and clean energy. Etc.
I get that you hate her with a searing passion, but if you calm down and go down the issues, you will find that she is, in fact, to Obama's left.

Link 2: "Sure she has constantly taken the wrong side of the issues in often catastrophic ways but she sure worked hard and once in a while she's said sorry for it and boy do I like her, so vote Hillary."
Link 3: "No matter what their records say Hillary is better on women's issues because she's female, so vote Hillary."
Link 4: "She sure is tough! Vote Hillary."
Link 5: "I care about many things... and I feel like Hillary cares about things too. I won't lay out her policy positions on these things but, vote Hillary."
Link 6: "Combination of the above 5 links repeated. Vote Hillary."
Thanks for making my point.

HEY LOOK! There's a picture of Clinton texting on a plane! Put words on it! That'll show everyone why she should be president!

(5,764 posts)Here in the real world Sanders supporters have been pushing single payer and progressive social safety net reform and increased financial sector regulation and a far less hawkish foreign policy in considerable detail while getting rather pissed off that your candidate actively opposes every liberal position on any of these topics.
But keep with your alternate reality world in which both sides don't have policy justification for their candidates if it comforts you while you march behind the person leading the Democratic party ever rightward.

(10,164 posts)A young player named Taylor Comeau got some play with my local NWSL team, Portland Thorns FC as an amateur "replacement" when so much of the team was called up to various national squads for the Women's World Cup last year. Quality player...I'm pretty sure she landed a contract with another team in the league, but I can't recall which.
