Why Is Everyone So Worried Tonight?

I followed the news and the polls today and everything looked quite good to me. Obama dropped by 3 points in the 538 odds but nate silver didn't really seem to make a big deal out of it. Yet, i am getting panicked texts from my dad worried about non-specific issues relating to the election. I hear that Chris Matthews was freaking out about something. I see Andrew Sullivan is freaking out. Of course I see people here freaking out. What am I missing? Just some pre-election jitters or is there a piece of news that I didn't see where this whole thing has come crashing down around us?

I think that when things start looking good, we tend to worry about what can go wrong.

I am looking forward to opening a bottle of Pinot Noir about 10:30 - 11:00 PM EST on Election Night and celebrating with my wife.

we (well they really, sorry but I'm not a handwringer) are used to losing and can only think in terms of combating external forces, not actualizing change; we wait for any news, even false bad news and then obsess over it. F*cking high maintenance supporters. Ridiculous At least donate for every chicken little comment is what I say.

That's what I do every time I hear Romney or any other Republican say anything that makes me angry. I just donated $10 earlier this week after Tommy Thompson's son told Obama to "go back to Chicago or Kenya."

I thought he was up slightly from yesterday? Obama upticked by 5-10 points on several electoral maps and polls I watch daily. 2 have him at 277 and one at 284. There is also no accounting for republicans putting out false meme's and polls to try to demoralize people and to get some gullable republicans to jump on the bandwagon which will take this country over a bigger cliff than any perceived physical cliff.

Wondering that myself.

In between all of this fun on DU I managed 3 loads of laundry, dirty dishes, two kids home from school on a half day, two parent teacher conferences, hanging out with my conservative Dad while he came to watch my kids so I could attend said conferences, and made dinner. And I am still in a good mood even after arguing politics with my father.

RCP has Obama up and another poll showed Obama leading in OH. Yes, PPP had some screwy polls but I looked at their crosstabs and they had IA as Repub plus 4 in voter ID. In a state that has been an advantage for Dems in terms of registration for a long time. So, I am fine. I am guessing it is pre-election jitters. Get the freaking out done now and then go on with next week.

I think people look at this race and see the reality that almost half of the people polled recently would make Romney POTUS. It is a visceral reaction to an outside possibility.

A lot of people do not vote and do not care one way or the other. Most people I know are woefully oblivious to... meh, they're just oblivious, but they got their iPhone! Yay!

the PPP polls out of IA and NH. Mostly 'cause it seems unlikely their polls would have a Republican bias, and because both IA and NH are states I've sorted out in my mind as likely, in the end, to go for Obama, so it sucks to see a Romney lead there, even if it's a within-the-margin-of-error-1-point one.

will be re-elected, but I think people are annoyed that there so many stupid people voting for Romney. Anyone with half a functioning brain should be able to see that Romney is a walking disaster.

The thought of Romney in the WH is frightening, so I think people imagine that happening and freak.

We haven't gone through one in awhile but Obama's debate win has not been cooked into many polls yet and we will need a strong showing from Barack on Monday to seal the deal.

That debate's on foreign policy and, at times where average Americans aren't feeling like they're under imminent threat of attack (i.e. the Cold War, or the four years after 9/11), foreign policy is considered a real snoozefest. I doubt it will draw anywhere near as many viewers as the last two, and, unless one candidate does something utterly ridiculous (Obama declaring that he really is a Kenyan Muslim, Romney vowing to dedicate American lives and honor to crushing the enemies of Kolob), it probably won't change muc of anything. I think the debates so far are the only ones that are going to "move the needle" -- from now on, it's going to be campaign appearances, ads, and GOTV that will tell the tale.

...and that Romney, even as he slipped marginally behind in national polls, made some gains in state polling that would suggest the race isn't totally over yet.

Oh, yes, and also: Gallup.

Romney and Ryan can tell any lie they want and they are still in the race. Romney tells the country to fuck off concerning his tax returns and nothing happens. Twelve years after electronic voting machines helped steal the election for Bush, very little, if anything, has changed. The Supreme Court (supreme in name only) still has five assholes on it, some of whom selected Bush. Rick Santorum is on the Late Show right now, lying his ass off about Obama.
That might indicate why people are worried. Personally, if Nate Silver and Sam Wang have Obama in a good place, then so am I.

I am angry that the media is spinning away in Romney's favor, and I am angry that one debate could possibly make that much difference and allow Romney to introduce himself as someone else who sounded great, lied and made a lot of promises he has no intention of keeping, and many people bought into it. I am angry anytime I see that haughty, self-important jerk ahead of President Obama. But, ultimately, I think President Obama will pull this out, but it shouldn't even be close. Frankly, McCain was more of a decent and honest man tht Romney is.
