"Former President Bill Clinton says President Barack Obama is facing a tough re-election race because "impatient" Americans haven't fully recognized an economy on the mend.
Campaigning for Obama Friday night in Green Bay, Wis., Clinton urged voters to stay the course as more signs of a recovery sink in. Clinton says voters should judge Obama on the final three years, in which private sector job growth has made up for lost ground......"

As always Bill Clinton hits the heart of the matter. Americans are unsure of the recovery-- even some on DU. So Americans are impatient and would like a magic change for the better right now.. Romney is doing better than expected because he is taking advantage of that sentiment. That's why he is so vague and runs from any real implications of his policies. He already said on the 47% tape, that he expects to do well if he is elected President even by doing nothing, since the economy is recovering anyway. He'll just be stealing credit from Obama.
Romney projects himself as someone who can fix the economy-- that hasn't been challenged strongly enough I suspect. Most low information voters don't look more closely than who they think will help the economy more. The central criticism of him is as an uncaring, out of touch plutocrat (which appears about right to me). He managed to escape this painting to a large extent by his performance in the first debate, he did much worse in this regard in the second, but for those who are impatient with the economy he still appears viable to a large segment of the population. That was the real problem with the first debate-- not who won and lost, but that Romney projected that he was not as out of touch as had appeared before. I'm not sure the genie of Romney as "acceptable" can be completely be put back in the bottle, but we should try and the Obama campaign is trying hard every day. We should also stress that Romney did not do well in Massachusetts creating jobs.
Even more importantly, the idea that the economy is recovering and that be this time next year we will be doing much better has to be at the forefront of the remainder of the campaign. I think the perception of the economy will decide it and I think that the last unemployment report in two weeks will show some more improvement and will help (based on Gallup's polling). I think we should make sure to mention that the economy is improving -- give examples of consumer confidence, housing starts, the better unemployment numbers last month and predict better numbers for this month to make the strongest argument.

I seen a reference to this only once, but it should be found and used - relentlessly.
