(5,946 posts)I am getting so tired of people with no actual factual memory! But I should be used to it as my older sister claims I am making things up about our childhood, but I do remember things like No cartoons for me, my parents wanted me to watch the McCarthy hearings and remember,. I remember seeing the guy saying have you no shame. that is burned into my mind and my parents were whooping it up so much when it was said!
thanks for the memories.
edited for misspelling

(39,909 posts)There were two framed pictures hanging in the room:
FDR and the ubiquitous Catholic painting of Jesus, side by side.
It was drummed into me that I owed my life to FDR and the New Deal.
Only one TV, black and white back then, and it was tuned to the political shows.
I didn't really understand it at the time,
but much of that stuff stuck.
I owe so much of my Liberalism to that background.
Thanks for the reply.

(5,946 posts)We were union all the way,
now my surviving brother is a tea party idiot, who I don't talk to despite his living close by, is furiously anti union - well he would not have had nearly as nice a childhood without the union. he is also a racist with no decency toward his family outside his wife and child, but is devoted to her tea party family that has not helped him nearly as much - all takers not givers and so afraid someone else is going to get something - too bad he is now out of my will, it is getting smaller and smaller. all the time. someone is going to make out well, just not him.

(1,168 posts)I didn't know that about the Republicans' party platform from 1956!
Rachel and her producers should be forced to rewatch this segment.
In fact, everybody at MSNBC needs to be forced to watch this.

(2,145 posts)There is no media anymore that tells liberal views and information. You have to find the right people. You should be listenting to Thom Hartmann - I podcast him. Bill Press - very early! You should be keeping an eye out for liberal panels on C-Span book tv. You should be watching Amy Goodman Democracy Now, even Sam Seder and Ring of Fire which I also podcast. I work so podcasts are the only way I can get liberal information. Steph Miller is fun but not necessarily informative. They are few and far between but this would not be news if you took the time to learn from the professionals that are still presenting liberal views. I admit to be an information junkie however.
MSNBC is the last place I go for news or real journalism these days.

(39,909 posts)I've followed him from station to station and show to show.
I never miss "Brunch with Bernie", though it is on a break since Bernie started his campaign.
I currently catch him on Free Speech TV, XM Radio, and sometimes RT.
For the REAL political news, no one is better than Thom Hartmann with the exception of Amy Goodman, also on FSTV.

(2,145 posts)where do you find him? Unfortunately, most people work during the day and few stations - if any - broadcast him in the evening. I wish they would. Here in Seattle we have Bellevue Community College which offers his program at noon to 3 pm I send them money for picking his program up. His is the only liberal talk we have in the whole Seattle area. So how does that work for people who work?
You should listen to Seder and Papantonio and Kennedy on Ring of Fire but as I said, it now takes a podcast. Do you live in an area that still offers liberal talk? Chicago and Santa Fe do, and Phoenix has a station but I don't know of others. Actually, Bellingham WA also but can you imagine a metropolis the size of Seattle without any liberal talk at all?

(39,909 posts)younger than 60, and actively suppressed by what passes for today's Media.
Eisenhower believed that the RICH and the War Profiteers should help pay for WW2, and set taxes on the top bracket at 92%.
This had a twofold benefit:
*Corporate Owners, in order to avoid the 92%, "reinvested" their businesses, raising wages and benefits for their employees,
and raised enough revenue to pay off the War Debt,
PLUS fund very liberal programs for "regular" Americans who felt that they weren't being shut out of the American dream. (Though it took LBJ to pass the Civil Rights Act). We were moving forward, and that sustains HOPE.
BTW: People still got RICH during this era. That tax rate did NOT damper business. Business burgeoned, but it was smaller, locally owned businesses that grew the most.

(2,145 posts)and it is up to younger folk to get educated. This stuff is out there if they actively listen to people like Hartmann and the current hard to find talkers out there who give information instead of fluff or argument for the sake of arguing. No institutional memory and the lack of media is the problem. But young people who want change better get informed and active.
The Koch Brothers are winning this war of misinformation. No matter how many people on DU get rattled about it.

(15,435 posts)Don't know what year this was, but since I no longer watch any MSNBC because it TOO has GONE RIGHT, is she still talking like this??
The last time I heard her talking IT WASN'T ANYTHING LIKE THIS!
So Clinton supporters, seems SHE is telling you what so many of us Bernie supporters have known for so very long! DLC/THIRD WAY Democrats are FAR to the RIGHT of the THREE Republicans were.
I'm almost Bernie is to the right of them too!
Thanks for posting this!

(2,145 posts)But don't trust her because both Hillary and Obama have turned into Bernie. But both are a day late and a dollar short for me. Rachel? Once I trusted her but no more.
