Leather Subculture
The leather subculture denotes practices and styles of dress organized around sexual activities that involve leather garments, such as leather jackets, vests, boots, chaps, harnesses, or other items. Wearing leather garments is one way that participants in this culture self-consciously distinguish themselves from mainstream sexual cultures. Leather culture is most visible in gay communities and most often associated with gay men (enthusiasts are nicknamed "leathermen" , but it is also reflected in various ways in the gay, lesbian, bisexual, and straight worlds. Many people associate leather culture with BDSM (Bondage/Discipline, Dominance/Submission, Sado/Masochism, also called "SM" or "S&M" practices and its many subcultures. But for others, wearing black leather clothing is an erotic fashion that expresses heightened masculinity or the appropriation of sexual power; love of motorcycles, motorcycle clubs and independence; and/or engagement in sexual kink or leather fetishism.[1]
-------------
Association with BDSM
SM Men at London Pride 2008
In recent decades the leather community has been considered a subset of BDSM culture rather than a descendant of gay culture. Even so, the most visibly organized SM community has been a subculture of the gay community, as evidenced by the American competition known as 'International Mr. Leather' (established 1979), and SM Gays in the UK (established 1981). Meanwhile, other subcultures have likewise appropriated various leather fashions and practices.
LGBT
The Leatherman's Handbook by Larry Townsend, published in 1972, epitomizes the association of the leather subculture with BDSM.[10] Townsend described in detail a community of gay males who wore leather and casually engaged in sadomasochistic sex with one another. Recreational drugs and alcohol were frequently used. Pairings were often just for one night or a few days. Participants often took a dominant role in one encounter but a submissive role in another (a practice known as "switching" . Townsend describes very little in the way of social hierarchy or organization within this culture, though he does convey a definite sense of community.
Demographics
Although gay men are the most visible symbol of the leather community, in 2010 there are numerous women who identify as leatherwomen - and women have the International Ms. Leather (IMsL) event as their corollary to International Mr. Leather (IML). An example is Joan Jett, who has a leather pride sticker prominently displayed on her guitar.

We all know what leather means within the LGBT community. It's no secret. The only reason she did that was to fit in and pander. Just as she has changed her tune with being an ally, she once wasn't.
It is what it is.

If you walk into the room and say 'How do you like my outfit?' you can't legitimately affect that clothing is off topic. If I bring up my bad haircut, I can't act insulted that you say 'yes, bad hair cut'. If I take the stage and say 'Don't you love my shirt?' it's too late to say 'how dare you all talk about my shirt'.
Pick one. No double standards.

(1,788 posts)I'm from Iowa, lived in the south only 2 years of my life, left there 13 years ago, and y'all still creeps out. When I lived outside of Pittsburgh for two years, I talked a bit like a Pittsburgher. I live in Europe, third country now, and yes, sometimes I will say things in British English, not American English...cupboard or wardrobe, bin for garbage, takeaway, car park....you get the idea. Hell, I say weekend wrong. It happens. Some of us pick up different ways of talking because of where we live or who we hang out with...
But no amount of telling you this will matter. You have your mind made up.
jack_krass
(1,009 posts)I could totally understand if Hillary picked up a little southern twang, based on her time spent down there.
Funny though, how this is only apparent when she's speaking to southerners!, and hits it's peak when she's speaking in black southern churches. Lol. Not a trace of this when she's speaking in New England or California!
all american girl
(1,788 posts)When I walk down to my grocery store, the British English comes popping out...they speak Dutch here. When I'm with my European friends, The British English comes pooping out. Hell, many years ago, I lived in Denmark, I was friends with a Japanese woman, I would do her mannerisms...had to make myself stop, that's from living in Japan for 3 years. So yeah, I change, but don't mean to, with who ever I'm talking to.
And actually, if you listen to her, she has her Chicago accent, but it has a bit of southern in it.
And I understand if you don't believe me, I'm just someone on the interwebs. It's funny though, my husband and 2 kids to the exact same thing. And I will admit, it is very, very strange.

I'm a gay Sanders supporter, but this registers a meh on the scale. Obviously it's a bit of pandering, but it's an entertaining and light-hearted kind. Abuelita, now that was tone deaf and offensive. This just seems like harmless fun.
I'm pretty critical of how Clinton has treated the LGBT community, but this one only registers a snort and an eyebrow.

Bluenorthwest
(45,319 posts)discussion by discussing them herself. It is insanely easy to give a speech wearing a jacket and never mention the jacket at all, I've done it many times myself. If any person makes the choice of making their outfit into a topic, or a pandering point then that person's outfit is now a valid point of discussion.
I understand that Camp Clinton thinks 'she has the right to constantly reference her fashion choices in public but to mention that she references her clothing is vorbotten' but that's an absurd double standard. She talks about her clothing, so others will too. Once you ring that bell, the bell is rung.

Priorities are weird things, and though I may find your predilection for her wardrobe without merit, indicative of a need for gossip, and getting close to being the lowest hanging piece of mental fruit on DU this month, you may actually think it's with nothing but merit-- relevant and telling in some weird way.
