Election Night...We'll Know Early Whether It'll Be a Late Night...

i think an early indicator of this election and how down to the wire it might get is going to be Virginia.

if Obama picks u VA then I think he coasts to a win and gets the call fairly early because Ohio just will not matter. this is of course assuming Nevada (in my opinion this is the most in the bag state Obama has right now of the battlegrounds), NH, and Wisconsin stay in line with where they are currently trending/polling.

if we don't get Virginia then we are going to be in for a very long night/early morning as it will most certainly come down to us needing just one of two states between Ohio and Colorado. i think both states are going to be very very close and as it currently stands we barely lead in Ohio but Romney barely is holding on to Colorado right now. if it finishes that way, we win. however if he's able to steal one of em last minute then we wont.

The state will be called around the same time it was in 2008.

I would bet a frost cold beer that PA and Wisconsin are both closer races than Ohio. The auto bailout has to be playing very well there.

Because we will know fairly quickly how likely it is that Romney will be able to pull the inside straight needed to win without Ohio. Unless Romney is clearly winning most of those states it is very unlikely he can pull it out. Some of the close ones are going to drop for Obama.

Hopefully the pukes don't try and still it again with florida like they did with Bush.

Can't believe they would not let them do a revote that time!!!

We probably won't know who won until the next day (and that's assuming there isn't any Florida 2000-type shit going on in Ohio).

thats unless we pick up VA early!

if we get VA early, imho we can go ahead and turn the evening into a "wait and see" kinda evening to a "its just a matter of time before they call it for us" kinda evening (assuming all current trends/poll stay where they are).

Some networks called it before the polls closed on the west coast and some a little after. In the end, Virginia was a late call and that was with a wider margin than what we're seeing in the polls right now. So, we won't know Virginia's outcome until probably after 11:00 EST.

...because the first wave of votes comes in from southeast Virginia, which is probably as deep-red as anywhere in the country (remember, it's where Jerry Falwell was based). I would personally expect that early returns will show Romney up in an apparent landslide, and it won't be until hours later, when the votes from the D.C. suburbs start coming in strength, that we'll have a truer picture of which way Virginia is headed. I, personally, wouldn't be surprised if Ohio is called before that point.

if that goes to Obama, the math becomes almost impossible for Romney. It's hard to imagine him winning Ohio and then turning around and swinging Iowa and Wisconsin. Obama's safe states plus OH, IA, and WI put him over the top. I think that will happen, although we will still be waiting for VA and possibly FL until much later.

The rural parts of VA will come in first and will make it look like Romney is winning for a long time. Then, NOVA will start coming in - they will determine how VA goes. VA won't be called until after 10 p.m.

Virginia does close a half hour earlier but that is not likely to be that significant, as Ohio at the moment appears to be more solidly in the Obama column than Virginia.

he will be the president, imho. But my guess is that early on they will characterize it as 'Too Early to Call' not 'Too Close to call' and I think they will just need more statistics before calling it for Obama.

We do virtually all optical scan paper ballots. Usually the absentees are already counted by poll closing the early vote will have been counted as well.

If we take FL as Ipsos projects, it will be an early evening. The magic number is 192. If we hit 192 on the east side of the Mississippi, pop the corks.
