7 Reasons Romney is a Terrible Choice for Veterans, Soldiers and Their Families
Perhaps the most un-appealing element of a Mitt Romney presidency is his blatant detachment from reality as experienced by a vast majority of the working and middle classes in America. In a time where the economy is slowly recovering from a collapse perpetuated by corporate-rigged financial, tax and regulation systems, Mitt Romney is a no-holds-barred vision of fully corporatized America.
While Romneys vision of government as functionary of business is bad news in general for an American community still reeling from the last few decades of corporate plunder, his generally vague demagoguery comes into ugly focus when we look at what his banalities mean for actual people when they become realities.
For example, one of the shameful omissions in this election season has been significant talk about soldiers, veterans, their families and their needs (from economic to medical). A Romney-Ryan regime would surely mean worsening conditions for soldiers both when theyre deployed and when they return. The duo is a startlingly bad choice for the entirety of the soldier and veteran communitymany of whom are precisely among the 47% Romney has basically admitted he has no interest in.

(50,560 posts)1. Romney probably has no idea what the word "endstrength" means. (FWIW, endstrength is the congressionally-mandated number of troops each branch of the service is allowed to have on September 30--the last day of the fiscal year.) Because Reagan is his god, and Reagan didn't know what it meant either, Romney will do shit like build a 600-ship navy but not have enough sailors in uniform to put all 600 of those ships to sea. Bush had a similar problem: not only did he not know what it meant, he didn't have the balls to go to Congress and ask for a troop strength increase--one of the principal drivers behind the mercenary army he fielded for Iraq. Romney wants to spend trillions on the military to make us a nation no other will dare threaten, but the most important weapon in the entire military is an index finger wrapped around a trigger, and Romney won't have enough of them.
2. Romney will make more dead troops. His entire foreign-policy apparatus is comprised of the same far-right hawks that served Bush so well. You KNOW he wants to start two or three more wars. Iran is a certainty, he might try going back into Iraq and I wouldn't put North Korea past him.
3. When the troops come home, they will be on their own. Romney doesn't have a tin ear when it comes to hearing the concerns of people not in his economic strata. He has a cast iron one--and it weighs about five tons, so the screaming won't get through. Romney will have no problem whatsoever in getting tens of thousands of our bravest young people shot to shit, but when they get home? "The Veterans Administration is nothing but socialism and we can't have that." It is not socialism. Its beneficiaries paid for it, in body parts and weird diseases doctors who only treat civilians can't even dream of.
