Wisconsin, Long The Front-Runner's Friend, Looks To Play Spoiler On Tuesday

Tomorrow, Wisconsin's primary is poised to do something it has not done in more than 30 years. It is about to deal a blow to a presidential front-runner.

Still more amazing is the fact the state's primary voters are expected to throw some shade on both the Democratic and Republican front-runners, an unimaginable result in the long era since World War II.

For six decades, Wisconsin has been anything but the field of dreams for long shots and outsiders. Wisconsinites have voted roughly halfway through the primary calendar, and they have almost always endorsed the candidates who were already winning.

Among Republicans, think Mitt Romney and John McCain, and both of the presidents named George Bush, plus Bob Dole, Ronald Reagan, Gerald Ford, Richard Nixon (three times) and Dwight Eisenhower.

Adding the Democrats, you have Barack Obama, John Kerry, Al Gore, Bill Clinton and Michael Dukakis — not to mention John F. Kennedy.

10. I think Bernie has to win WI big, and I think he will

If he doesn't win an open primary in Wisconsin by a pretty wide margin, I don't feel good about his chances in closed primaries in NY, PA, CT, MD and DE coming up on April 19 and 26.

"For his part, Sanders can benefit from the strong preponderance of Anglo white voters among Wisconsin Democrats. No one doubts he will carry this dominant demographic on Tuesday."

I think Sanders will definitely win, but I don't think it will be double-digit.

That's a good article. WI has a rich and interesting political history. Much of it good until recently.

13. He should have never been elected. We lost Feingold in that midterm, too.

Thankfully, that wrong is about to be corrected.

Democrats here do a shit job showing up for midterms and special elections. That's how it went bad. We need to do better. Every election counts.

A great American. It's difficult to believe that Wisconsin has been subjugated by tea party assholes like Scott Walker.

12. And Senator William Proxmire

An early proponent of campaign finance reform, early opponent of the Vietnam War, and creator of The Golden Fleece Award. He was particularly vigilant in exposing waste and corruption in the Defense Department. He was elected to serve the remainder of a term of Senator Joseph McCarthy, who Proxmire called "a disgrace to Wisconsin, to the Senate, and to America."

He gave daily speeches for 20 years on the floor of the Senate, over 3200 speeches, on the need to ratify the UN Convention on the Prevention and Punishment and Crime of Genocide. In 1986, the Senate ratified the convention by an 83-11 vote.

(Proxmire is a senator I always admired and who immediately came to mind when I thought of Wisconsin politicians, but I had to check Wiki for some of these specifics.)
