2016 Postmortem

Anything and anyone. "Let me ask you," Sanders said to National Journal reporter Simon van Zuylen-Wood in 2014, "what is the largest voting bloc in America? Is it gay people? No. Is it African Americans? No. Hispanics? No. What?" The senator answered his own question: "White working-class people."
To win elections, then, or to spark the "political revolution" Sanders has been fomenting from the stump, the trick is to lure true-blue American blue-collar white people back from the wilderness they're wandering in. It's precisely the opposite of the strategy that twice won Barack Obama the presidency.
So now his handlers are getting it: If Sanders wants to "win minority votes," he'd better start courting a wider demographic.
The whole article is disturbing...

(8,760 posts)Unless we retake the house, all we will be able to do is block bad Republican legislation.
Also, we need to win enough Senate seats in order to put actual liberals on the court.
Ignoring working class whites is a recipe for disaster.

(47,803 posts)Remember all that "What's the Matter with Kansas?" soul searching the Democrats have done over the years trying to figure out why the white working class was voting against its own interests by voting Republican?
That was considered a fundamental challenge before Clinton decided to market herself based on demographic appeal this time around.
Clinton was also a "Whats the Matter With Kansas" person in 2008 in one of her previous incarnations....AND she will be going back to it in the general.
That is NOT dismissing the importance of the minority vote. Sanders (and once upon a time Democrats) is talking about how to build a Big Tent.
