Maybe he used more than one subway in the last year as he made his way around the country and just didn't remember which ones you can use coins, vs tokens, vs passes, etc.

I even remember that there was a way to kink the MetroCard to get free rides (I saw people selling Metrocards with kinks like that for $5 on the streets). I don't remember when MTA finally fixed the kink bug, but I've been paying on my MetroCard and still carry one around in my wallet, even though I haven't been to New York for awhile. Yes, they do expire, but they do still carry value (if there is money) and very easy to transfer the value to a new card.
