2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumWould love to hear from New Yorkers
Given that Hillary was a Senator from New York through expedient political triangulation, she also spent her formative years in Illinois, Massachusetts and Arkansas.
Do the people of New York consider her one of their own or is she considered a carpetbagger?
From Websters Dictionary:
Carpetbagger - b. a political candidate who runs for office in a place where he or she has lived only for a short time

Anecdotically: there is a total absence of Hillary signs or bumper stickers
Here the same thing about her from people, "She lies about everything"
We were shopping for insurance and the agent asked us who we were voting for and
we said Bernie. She was too and went on to tell us that her cousin was in Bengazi and there calls for help were ignored.
Not a single person is actually admitting that they will vote for her.
Anecdotal but that's the news from my slice of NY.

(29,257 posts)A carpet bagger is someone that basically cynically moves to another state in order to take advantage of the voting patterns of a particular district in such a way as to ensure a victory and establish some political credentials.
That is precisely what Hillary did, I am afraid.

I found that it was a quicker trip to mid-town from my NJ home than when I lived in Queens. Owned property in Brooklyn until a year ago. So, yes I consider myself a New Yorker and yes.
Hillary is a carpetbagger.

(2,479 posts)She parachuted in, got a free pass to the Senate from Chuck Schumer which was obviously just a platform from which to launch her (2008) campaign for president. She does have a lot of ties here to Wall Street banksters and to various party insiders (including our confused mayor), but to regular people? Whether or not they will vote for her, I don't think most ordinary people here think of her as a New Yorker, at all! I would say the only time she is around is for her fancy fundraisers.
I agree

(1,113 posts)This used to be Rangel's district but they redrew it to Nadler in 2010.
Clinton moved to Chappaqua from DC, a high profile politician gaining a lot of sympathy after the Monica and Impeachment chapters of her husband's final years.
When Hill was in office she was eloquent and had her finger on the pulse of the state, especially as far as the 9/11, Afghan/Iraq/terror retaliation syndrome.
She paid lip service to the Homeland Security problem, but supported FISA surveillance and data collection by the NSA.
She tried to bring manufacturing to the state, but a lot of it was weapons: Lockheed, Northrup, &c.
Everything she said or did was successful in keeping her on a path to her 2008 run.
She's a great speaker, but she hangs out with too many millionaires for my taste.
One thing's for sure: her career comes first and the issues come second.
Voice for Peace
(13,141 posts)up close to the world of greed cheat deceit hypocrisy lobbyists lawyers politicians egomaniacs. She was pure one pointed ambition for the white house and was imo wormy, sleazy, pretentious. The Clintons have consistently surprised & disappointed. I'm however beginning to admire them in a new way, but more in the bonnie & clyde vein than as respectable citizens. A couple of clever kids rise out of the boonies and pull off the longest running most successful american hustle in history. A great movie one day no doubt.

(1,604 posts)Even voted for her. The jobs she promised never came. Glad I never looked back. NY is a mess thanks to political corruption. She was just another wheel in that party machine.
Bernie is the accidental revolutionary. He's long overdue. I can see why Hillary supporters are so afraid of her. All my cousins and former in laws are 100% behind him. My former union brothers and sisters are bucking the union endorsements and voting Bernie.
Bernie is as important to older Dems as he is the youth vote.

While she was Senator, she was mostly in Washington D.C. one would think.
I'm guessing she spent less of her life in New York than anywhere else.
BklnDem75
(2,918 posts)You simply want to attach that label on her.
Red Oak
(697 posts)I should have said:
It is obvious that she spent less time living in New York that anywhere else in her life.
She lived in Illinois, Arkansas and, after being given a Senatorship by the establishment, Washington D.C.
Right now she lives in lily white Chappaqua, NY. A place that makes Vermont look diverse.
baldguy
(36,649 posts)He's not from Vermont, he spends so little time there. And as a Senator he spends most of his time in Washington DC, one would think.
Red Oak
(697 posts)How would you fit Bernie into that definition?
baldguy
(36,649 posts)And isn't it interesting that VT's other Senator, Patrick Leahy, has endorsed Hillary Clinton.
Really, the old saying is appropriate: Those who live in glass houses shouldn't throw stones. The Bernie people seem to have a lot of stones.
From Websters online:
Carpetbagger - a political candidate who runs for office in a place where he or she has lived only for a short time
So he lives there four years and runs for office.
How long did Hillary live in New York before Schumer gave her the Senate seat?

Never forget the battle cry of the 73' Mets: YA GOTTA BELIEVE!!!! (They made it to the World Series only to get beaten by the Oakland A's). I just don't see New Yorkers missing out on a chance to be part of the story.
But NYC is one thing. Long Island and upstate are different beasts. I think Hillary hold her own in these areas.
I agree with a previous post that no one gives a darn about carpetbagging. If you ever notice, the most passionate New Yorkers are those who came from elsewhere and made the city their own. That said, I believe it really comes down to authenticity. And I think Bernie wins hands down in this department.
FYI, Willie Mays, the "Say Hey" kid was in outfield for the 73 Mets!

So yes, she's a New Yorker - not a native one, but then as DanTex said, most of us probably aren't natives here either.
Doesn't matter - she won the Senate seat ONLY because of Bill. She seems like a nice person, but not a very good Democrat, and incompetent and ineffective when given the responsibility to operate the levers of power.
