Did Sanders make a Papal boo-boo?

Bloomberg ‏@business 36m36 minutes ago
Vatican official criticizes Sanders’s "monumental discourtesy" http://bloom.bg/1RIVvFP

Democratic presidential candidate Bernie Sanders reached out to obtain his invitation to the Vatican and showed “monumental discourtesy” in the process, a senior Vatican official said.

“Sanders made the first move, for the obvious reasons,” Margaret Archer, president of the Pontifical Academy of Social Sciences, which is hosting the conference Sanders will attend, said in a telephone interview. “I think in a sense he may be going for the Catholic vote but this is not the Catholic vote and he should remember that and act accordingly -- not that he will.”

Sanders told MSNBC earlier on Friday that he had been “very moved by the invitation” to the Vatican, adding: “I am a big fan of the Pope.”

Papal official denies report Sanders invited himself to Vatican
Source: Reuters

U.S. Democratic presidential candidate Bernie Sanders was invited to speak at an April 15 Vatican event by the Vatican, a senior papal official said on Friday, denying a report that Sanders had invited himself.

"I deny that. It was not that way," Monsignor Marcelo Sanchez Sorondo told Reuters in a telephone interview while he was traveling in New York. Sorondo, a close aide to Pope Francis, is chancellor of the Pontifical Academy of Social Sciences, which is hosting the event.

He said it was his idea to invite Sanders.

A Bloomberg report quoted Margaret Archer, president of the Pontifical Academy of Social Sciences, as saying that Sanders had broken with protocol by failing to contact her office first.

"This is not true and she knows it. I invited him with her consensus," said Sorondo, who is senior to Archer.

An invitation to Sanders dated March 30, which was emailed to Reuters, was signed by Sorondo and also included Archer's name.

.............Respect for Pope

Sanders earlier on Friday said, “this is an invitation from the Vatican, from a pope
that I have enormous respect for in term of the level of consciousness that he’s raising on the need to have morality in our economy."

The office of the pope moved quickly to distance the pontiff from Sanders’s visit.
Father Federico Lombardi, the Pope’s spokesman, said Sanders had been invited “not by the pope but by the pontifical academy of social sciences.” Lombardi told the Italian news agency Ansa: “For the moment there is no expectation that there will also be a meeting with the pope.”
.................

Sanders told reporters in New York on Friday that he is “very excited about this invitation from the Vatican
to participate in a major conference dealing with how we can inject morality into today’s economy.”.................

Pope Francis has very enlightened views on many issues. remember how positively he was received by peopoe of all stripes when he visited the US?

Sure a lot of people have problems with the Church's stance on things like abortion, etc. Me too.

But in terms of overall social and economic justice, he reflects the principles of Sanders and many progressives and liberals -- as well as others who respond to those aspects of his message.

Rick Warren on the otehr hand, is just a pastor of an American megachurch whose divisive and conservative views on social issues did not merit giving the invocation at the inauguration.

http://www.cruxnow.com/life/2016/02/22/bernie-sanders-pope-francis-is-a-socialist-like-me/

In an interview with the Canadian Catholic television network Salt + Light that will air Tuesday, Sanders explained why he thinks Pope Francis is a socialist, comes to his defense against detractors who say the pope doesn’t understand poverty, and says that when it comes to abortion, “we just have to disagree.”

Sanders, a self-proclaimed democratic socialist, said he believes Francis is of the same ilk because the pope “talks about wealth being used to serve people, not as an end in itself.”

“What he has also done is raise the issue of the worship of money, the idolatry of money, and to say maybe that’s not what human life should be about, and that is a very, very radical critique of the hypercapitalist system, world system, that we’re living in today,” he said.

“What the Pope is saying is that human life, our existence, should be more than just the accumulation of more wealth,” he continued. “I agree with that.”

http://america.aljazeera.com/opinions/2015/9/pope-francis-bernie-sanders-and-the-moral-imperative-of-systemic-change.html

This surprising intersection of political-economic ideas rooted in morality also reminds us that many people of the sixties generation not only have a history in common, but have become highly successful and moved into positions of considerable influence. Moreover, the huge response in America, to the Sanders campaign in particular, tells us something important not only about the state of this country, but also about what people with conviction can accomplish, despite their age. The moral courage in the face of systemic challenges demonstrated by both leaders recalls the sixties generation they are both a product of; Sanders as a civil rights activist amidst intense social turmoil and the pope as a young religious leader during a time of military dictatorship and right-wing death squads.

The pope has condemned the arrangements of our current political-economic system. Early on in his papacy, he set the tone:

Some people continue to defend trickle-down theories which assume that economic growth, encouraged by a free market, will inevitably succeed in bringing about greater justice and inclusiveness in the world. This opinion, which has never been confirmed by the facts, expresses a crude and naïve trust in the goodness of those wielding economic power and in the sacralized workings of the prevailing economic system. Meanwhile, the excluded are still waiting.

Recently he has struck an even more radical tone. “An unfettered pursuit of money rules,” he told grassroots organizers in Bolivia. “That is the dung of the devil.”

Glad he's going. A POTUS' decisions stateside have the capacity to effect the lives of people worldwide, especially the poor and working classes.

Good that he is going.

She could simply have said, "He asked for an invitation, which wasn't proper protocol."

Instead she goes overboard, accusing him of underhanded motives and adds that nasty little thing at the end: "He should act accordingly -- not that he will."

It's vituperative on a weirdly personal level, coming from a Vatican official.

who issued an invitation.

From the BBC

Democratic presidential hopeful Bernie Sanders has accepted an invitation from the Pope to the Vatican.
Mr Sanders, who is Jewish, accepted an invitation to Rome for a conference at the end of next week.
The Vatican visit is four days before the primary contest in New York, a competitive battle between him and front-runner Hillary Clinton.
"I am a big, big fan of the pope," Mr Sanders told MSNBC, saying they share the same views on inequality.
"He's trying to inject this sense of morality into how we do economics... and we need that absolutely desperately."
He will attend a conference on social, economic and environmental issues and give a speech on 15 April, his campaign said.

Mr Sanders and Pope Francis have similar views on fighting income inequality, he said, and he was "very moved" by the invitation from the Vatican.
He said he and the pope disagree on women's rights and gay rights, but Pope Francis has "injected a moral consequence into the economy".
The senator from Vermont is trailing Mrs Clinton but gaining momentum after a strong of wins, most recently in the Wisconsin primary.
In the last few days, a mostly civil fight between the two became more personal as Mr Sanders accused his rival of not being "qualified" to be president.
Pope Francis said on Friday that the Catholic Church should be less strict and show more compassion to "imperfect" Catholics.
He called on the Church to be welcoming to gay Catholics but did not change the Church's views on LGBT families and marriage.

.............Respect for Pope

Sanders earlier on Friday said, “this is an invitation from the Vatican, from a pope that I have enormous respect for in term of the level of consciousness that he’s raising on the need to have morality in our economy."

Francis has raised the Catholic church’s emphasis on issues of poverty, environmental stewardship and aid to refugees. The pope already has played a role in this year’s election through criticism of anti-immigrant policies embraced by Republican candidates.

Sanders told reporters in New York on Friday that he is “very excited about this invitation from the Vatican to participate in a major conference dealing with how we can inject morality into today’s economy.”.................

However Bishop Marcelo Sanchez Sorondo, the chancellor of the Academy, speaking on the phone from New York, said he extended the invitation to Sanders, though he declined to say who initiated the contacts.
We are interested in having him because we have two presidents coming from Latin America, I thought it would be good to have an authoritative voice from North America,” Sanchez Sorondo said. Asked when he when the invitation was extended, he said, “Quite some time ago.”

Bloomberg has been quick to update their earlier story in which Vatican official Margaret Archer seemed to cast aspersions on the invitation to Senator Sanders to speak at an upcoming conference.

And the conspiracy theorists aren’t going to like it.

Sorry, folks. The Vatican invitation to Bernie Sanders is real. And it’s spectacular.

Sanders said, “this is an invitation from the Vatican, from a pope...Vatican distances from Sander

.....the Sanders later drops the 'pope' when he speaks about this.

So, Sanders name drops the pope-the Vatican calls him on his big fish story--and then Sanders drops the word -pope-the next time he speaks. got it!

You forget what happened when Sanders talked to the press today.

...too bad this pandering ploy turned into such a fiasco.

Like most of the Sanders incidents, this one is being served up by the arrogance of his defenders. It's interesting how the Sanders campaign leads supporters to embrace the indefensible, like relying on the truthfulness of the prevaricating Vatican which still hasn't come to grips with the molestations and rapes of children by priests which they lied about and covered up for decades.

Not exactly the folks I'd go to when I'm looking for the truth, but you make your own choices and live with those.

Papal official denies report Sanders invited himself to Vatican

VATICAN CITY/WASHINGTON (Reuters) - U.S.
