Democratic presidential candidate Bernie Sanders reached out to obtain his invitation to the Vatican and showed monumental discourtesy in the process, a senior Vatican official said.
Sanders made the first move, for the obvious reasons, Margaret Archer, president of the Pontifical Academy of Social Sciences, which is hosting the conference Sanders will attend, said in a telephone interview. I think in a sense he may be going for the Catholic vote but this is not the Catholic vote and he should remember that and act accordingly -- not that he will.
Sanders told MSNBC earlier on Friday that he had been very moved by the invitation to the Vatican, adding: I am a big fan of the Pope.

U.S. Democratic presidential candidate Bernie Sanders was invited to speak at an April 15 Vatican event by the Vatican, a senior papal official said on Friday, denying a report that Sanders had invited himself.
"I deny that. It was not that way," Monsignor Marcelo Sanchez Sorondo told Reuters in a telephone interview while he was traveling in New York. Sorondo, a close aide to Pope Francis, is chancellor of the Pontifical Academy of Social Sciences, which is hosting the event.
He said it was his idea to invite Sanders.
A Bloomberg report quoted Margaret Archer, president of the Pontifical Academy of Social Sciences, as saying that Sanders had broken with protocol by failing to contact her office first.
"This is not true and she knows it. I invited him with her consensus," said Sorondo, who is senior to Archer.
An invitation to Sanders dated March 30, which was emailed to Reuters, was signed by Sorondo and also included Archer's name.

Bernie Sanders replied directly, as always and with truth. How could Hillary Clinton be qualified when she has made so many historic lapses of judgement that led to hundreds of thousands of deaths? Iraq vote, Libya, action, Honduras, Haiti

http://www.cruxnow.com/life/2016/02/22/bernie-sanders-pope-francis-is-a-socialist-like-me/
Sanders, a self-proclaimed democratic socialist, said he believes Francis is of the same ilk because the pope talks about wealth being used to serve people, not as an end in itself.
What he has also done is raise the issue of the worship of money, the idolatry of money, and to say maybe thats not what human life should be about, and that is a very, very radical critique of the hypercapitalist system, world system, that were living in today, he said.
What the Pope is saying is that human life, our existence, should be more than just the accumulation of more wealth, he continued. I agree with that.
http://america.aljazeera.com/opinions/2015/9/pope-francis-bernie-sanders-and-the-moral-imperative-of-systemic-change.html
The pope has condemned the arrangements of our current political-economic system. Early on in his papacy, he set the tone:
Some people continue to defend trickle-down theories which assume that economic growth, encouraged by a free market, will inevitably succeed in bringing about greater justice and inclusiveness in the world. This opinion, which has never been confirmed by the facts, expresses a crude and naïve trust in the goodness of those wielding economic power and in the sacralized workings of the prevailing economic system. Meanwhile, the excluded are still waiting.
Recently he has struck an even more radical tone. An unfettered pursuit of money rules, he told grassroots organizers in Bolivia. That is the dung of the devil.
Glad he's going. A POTUS' decisions stateside have the capacity to effect the lives of people worldwide, especially the poor and working classes.
Good that he is going.

From the BBC
Democratic presidential hopeful Bernie Sanders has accepted an invitation from the Pope to the Vatican.
Mr Sanders, who is Jewish, accepted an invitation to Rome for a conference at the end of next week.
The Vatican visit is four days before the primary contest in New York, a competitive battle between him and front-runner Hillary Clinton.
"I am a big, big fan of the pope," Mr Sanders told MSNBC, saying they share the same views on inequality.
"He's trying to inject this sense of morality into how we do economics... and we need that absolutely desperately."
He will attend a conference on social, economic and environmental issues and give a speech on 15 April, his campaign said.
Mr Sanders and Pope Francis have similar views on fighting income inequality, he said, and he was "very moved" by the invitation from the Vatican.
He said he and the pope disagree on women's rights and gay rights, but Pope Francis has "injected a moral consequence into the economy".
The senator from Vermont is trailing Mrs Clinton but gaining momentum after a strong of wins, most recently in the Wisconsin primary.
In the last few days, a mostly civil fight between the two became more personal as Mr Sanders accused his rival of not being "qualified" to be president.
Pope Francis said on Friday that the Catholic Church should be less strict and show more compassion to "imperfect" Catholics.
He called on the Church to be welcoming to gay Catholics but did not change the Church's views on LGBT families and marriage.
