2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumJust wondering why Mitt is coming to Pensacola, FL this Saturday?
This area is red....60/40 something split between Repubs and Dems. Solidly went for McCain in 2008 and there are abundant signs for Mitt in my neighborhood and around town. Just wondering if there is a possibility that other parts of Florida may not be as strong as they would like it to be for Mitt so he is showing up here to shore up his base. I don't sense a great enthusiasm for Mitt but he has support never the less because A. They hate Obama and B. He is their candidate. They could have run Tony the Tiger and they'd vote for him.
But just was curious if this visit to the Panhandle is meant to secure his base to offset losses in other parts of the state, such as losses among women, Hispanics and perhaps some softening among Seniors? As best I recall, Mitt has not been here at all during this campaign.
This story was carried in our local paper this morning and I got an automated call on my phone this morning, inviting me to come see Mitt. Oh, for sure, I'll be there with bells on...... And for the record, I am a lifelong Democrat (cast first vote for Carter in 1976) so I have no idea why they called ME to invite me to this shindig....billed as a Victory Rally. Maybe they are hoping to snag disgruntled former Obama supporters??? I dunno, but they can count me among the "not coming".

(5,810 posts)with a few notable exceptions (Ted Kennedy beat down in 94). So he probably needs something to perk him back up again. This will be the perfect venue for THAT. Folks in this part of the world just can't get enough of their Republican icons. Good grief, it's enough to make ya gag. Can't they see through this man? I guess in their view, a fraudulent white guy is better than the smart, with it black guy any day. Hope we teach them a lesson in two weeks! They can all lick their wounds one more time and maybe learn a lesson about how to pick a decent, credible candidate that they can truly get behind instead of begrudgingly voting for their candidate out of hate for the other guy.

(5,810 posts)That there were many more places that seemed like logical places for him to visit. Pensacola does not seem like a place they'd visit in the last two weeks (a week and three days to be precise) before the election.....unless they NEED to visit here for specific reasons, such as shoring up a weak base. They keep telling us their base is "enthusiastic" but I wonder about that. Maybe they'd rather try to make that notion fly and want to stay away from the idea that they are racists who just want Obama out. Not sure. But I did think it odd that he is coming here when he allegedly has this area sewn up. And there are lots of OTHER places he needs more. Hmmm....

(714 posts)Even the people I know are voting because they hate Obama(because he is a Muslim) never mention Rmoney. I think they are embarrasses that he is the best they got. The crowd behind him when he speaks always look miserable!

(42,733 posts)which is solidly blue and went for Obama over McCain by a better than 60/40 margin in 2008. At this point, the rallies are less about convincing people to change who they support or even to sway "undecided" voters. Its to energize the base to GOTV.
