As long as Camp Hillary keeps pumping out misstatements about what Bernie said about the visit, I'll keep posting the truth of what Bernie said. Bernie NEVER claimed the Pope invited him. He has consistently stated the Vatican invited him which is true.
In his all his statements except one on The View, Bernie consistently stated that he didn't know if he would meet the Pope.
More importantly, absolutely no one here knows what may have been said to him or his staff regarding the Pope possibly greeting the conference attendees as they arrive. Given this Conference deals with issues that are pertain directly to the Pope's lifelong commitment of helping the helpless, it is not unimaginable that he would make a brief appearance.

Good political move. Bernie's not going there in the home stretch of running for the Democratic nomination for president to talk about sustainability. It must be hard on him, but obviously his campaign is hoping it will pay off.

(58,785 posts)lying for Bernie. I own his book The Age of Sustainable Development, have taken his MOOC, and am signed up for e-mails. I truly don't mind his endorsing Bernie and saying good things about him, but I am extremely disappointed in his willingness to lie to promote him. I've read them. They're real, they're rather dirty and dishonorable, and they're very unworthy of a man whose work at least I still admire.
You know, you might ask why, when both Democratic candidates for president are very similar on climate issues, ONE would be invited to the Vatican by name. I'm guessing you haven't and won't, of course, because you know you don't like the answer. It didn't happen.

You know, posts like this are safe from unpleasant reality on the BS forum. But this one was posted here, and the truth is that Bernie is flying around the planet as a campaign stunt. Because NY has A LOT OF Catholics and he is hoping it'll grab their attention. And everyone, but a few deniers seemingly, knows it.
I have no objection to campaigning. This trip is typical political maneuvering these days. My objection is to the really giant lies about it on an open forum. Whoppers! Yoooge, blatant whoppers!

(58,785 posts)more terrible thing, to my mind at least. It's a good an important book. Verrry heavy. And you didn't support him and his cause by buying his book either. It actually cost a good chunk of change.
Even the heroic defender of the great man that you are, I have some doubts about which one of us terrible people Sachs would push off the lifeboat first. Given his political behavior, the doubt is real. Who knows?

(58,785 posts)in order to associate his name with the Pope and you're using politics as a dirty word? Come on. Just be honest. This is a legitimate campaign move.
Lying and pretending that it is anything else are what is disgusting. Take it to the BS forum and cheer safely there about Bernie's likeness to Jesus and the Pope. God!

(4,961 posts)a conference at the Vatican - and that's a bad thing.
Your anger is a very sad thing to see. And kind of sick.
Hortensis
(58,785 posts)Both completely ridiculous claims. As for sick, I'm irritated into doing something I keep telling myself I won't -- arguing with true believers. But, Jesus-like in his greatness? Endorsed by the Pope? Invited to speak at the Vatican by the Pope? GODDDD!!!
I know true believers have no limits on what they will claim if they think it's favorable to their leader, but... Where are all the other Bernie supporters who could speak intelligently for him instead of ceding discussion to truly silly idolatry? Yes, I know. They're not about to! I'm off again too.

(4,961 posts)It's not so strange to think that the Vatican might know who Sanders is and thought he was a good fit for what they were discussing? They've already said that Sanders has expressed interest many times in what will be discussed.

tha Sanchez Sorondo is the personal aide and close friend of Francis. Frankly I never saw mentioned that he was even a bishop. Any reference to him was a Vatican official and senior to Archer.
This is important because I very much doubt that Sorondo would not mention to his close friend his plans to invite Bernie or if he didn't mention it perhaps he knew that his close friend would not be displeased.

The rest of your nonsense is wild speculation ... which makes no sense at all even if we took it at face value.

(12,704 posts)one story that mentions it - everything I saw and read refers to Sanchez Sorondo as a Vatican official.

Liberty University? Where he puts those silly wedge issues aside to discuss the more important issues?

(12,704 posts)if he was going to the Vatican and meeting the Pope he said yup but that was the only time but more importantly, as I stated, no one knows if perhaps someone told Bernie that the Pope might greet them or drop by.

I believe gay rights and gay marriage.
Unlike your candidate who went to Saddleback Church to pander to the bigots and who also agreed with the religious right in opposing marriage equality.
And who also recently said she's willing to compromise on abortion.
Let me know when Bernie starts agreeing to bargain away our rights.

(57,349 posts)And a democratic socialist is a lot farther away from being a libertarian than a conservative Democrat is - just so you know where Hillary's supporters fall on the spectrum.
Unlike Hillary Bernie always stood up for our rights, so I can see why many want to smear and lie about his record.

(4,961 posts)All I've read is that Sachs said the Vatican asked for his help in reaching Bernie.
snagglepuss
(12,704 posts)it is so easy to start believing the spin. I deleted that post.
So here's what you are referring to:
The chancellor of the body, Monsignor Marcelo Sanchez Sorondo, ...said that it was his idea to invite Sanders.
Jeffrey Sachs, a Columbia University professor who is presenting at the event, said in a phone interview that he helped the Vatican reach out to Bernie Sanders in March, and he doesnt know why Archer alleged that the Sanders campaign initiated the gig. The academy sent the invitation, its pure and simple, he said. A lot of people in the Vatican respect him a lot. He is speaking in the same kind of moral themes that Pope Francis, and the social teachings of the Church, promote, which is a moral economy. A representative who works with Sachs also passed along an official invitation from Sanchez Sorondo to Sanders dated on March 30.

(4,961 posts)misreading things.
Now Sachs is part of Sanders advisory team so I can easily see the Vatican asking him to reach out to Sanders. And I can also see Sanders expressing interest in this symposium to Sachs. But the Clintonites have this overwhelming need to distort everything - even something that would be considered an honor to many - into something nefarious.
I'm just trying to keep 'em honest!

(57,936 posts)He has given his life to help the underserved, the poor and the disabled and for our environment. Hillary has given hers to raising money.
That's just where we are today.
And the Hillary crowd is jealous of Bernie's authenticity, his dedication to high ideals and many years of service. It's those qualities of Bernie that got him the invitation to this Vatican meeting. Hillary was not invited.
Those are the simple facts.
