2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumPPP (final poll) Democratic voters are enough to put Santorum over the top in MI.
In the final PPP poll, MI is on a knife edge. Romney owns the 18% that have already voted (56-29), and leads overall (38-37) while Santorum, recovering from the relentless negative carpet bombing, is doing well, right when it matters, the day before (39-34) and (41-31) amongst those who have not voted.
I've been burned by PPP before. The last day PPP polling in FL was (39-35) Romney/Gingrich.
But what we can say is Operation Clown has drawn the attention of 'The Front Runner Himself'. Mitt thinks Santorum is in bed 'the Obama people'.
'Its outrageous and disgusting, a terrible dirty trick at the last hour,' Romney said. | AP Photo
Mitt Romney blasted Rick Santorums campaign Tuesday for robocalls encouraging Democrats in Michigan to vote in the Republican primary, blasting the tactic as outrageous and disgusting.
Its a dirty trick. Its outrageous to see Rick Santorum team up with the Obama people and go out after the union labor in Detroit to try to get them to vote against me, Romney said on Fox & Friends on the day of the Michigan and Arizona primaries. Look, we dont want Democrats deciding who our nominees going to be, we want Republicans deciding who our nominees are going to be.
I just think its outrageous and disgusting, a terrible dirty trick at the last hour, by the way, late in the afternoon on the day before the election, maybe hoping no one would notice, they start sending out calls to Democrats, union members, telling them to go into the Republican primary and vote against Mitt Romney.
It's not true Mitt. We love you. It's just that we love earth shattering landslides a little bit more.

(290 posts)Romney's crew had no issues with dirty tricks when they used then-candidate Barack Obama's 2008 comment deliberately out of context, the one that quoted of McCain saying "we can't talk about the economy", did they?
On the contrary, they were quite proud of themselves even after they were called out on it.

(7,865 posts)Seriously, I think I must have missed something here but all I have seen on this story is spin and speculation. Usually when the repug-niks do this sort of thing to us we record the call, look at the fake posters, or get something resembling evidence.
Is there evidence? If there is could someone link this?

I draw the line at resurrecting Paul Harvey for such tacky political maneuverings

(7,865 posts)I must have missed it again.
And I would draw a similar line, but I have yet to see actual evidence.
To me this seems more like 'advanced expectation management' wherein Romney is trying to stave off the stink of defeat through chicanery and trickery by placing doubt on any votes from Michigan.
I really doubt you could organize enough Democrats to make an actual difference this way.

(645 posts)Romney seems to be trying to spin away a defeat, he doesn't sound confident at all.
Santorum is talking about how everyone is going to be surprised tonight.
Im thinking their internals both show Santorum taking Michigan.

(190 posts)And after Mittens has run such a clean, positive campaign, focusing exclusively on his qualities and track record of leadership. All he wants to do is serve his country and govern in the best interests of all American citizens. Why does mean ol' Ricky gotta hit below the belt like that?!
Even worse was how Mr. Pro-Life resurrected the corpse of Paul Harvey to record this message. Shameful!
All sarcasm aside, I am curious as to exactly who the "hard-working Democratic men and women" are who "supported" a robocall that admits it was "paid for by Rick Santorum for President".

(326 posts)that more democrats need to register as Republicans so they can vote in the primaries and skew the vote to either more reasonable candidates or more nutjobs who don't have a chance - for states with closed primaries. This could be very interesting!
I would tread VERY carefully here. The American people are pretty dumb, and I don't think we should be doing anything that puts Ricky anywhere near the White House.
Do not think for a minute that this Nation could not elect this clown President!

(1,034 posts)Yeah, it seems ridiculous that he could get elected. But we also thought that about Bush.
Never mind that Bush didn't actually win, because Santorum won't have to either.
We shouldn't bluff if we're not willing to live with the consequences of this dipshit being appointed president.

(3,596 posts)I believe each political party determines the rules of their own primaries, i.e. whether or not you have to be a declared party member in order to vote in that party's primary or not.
If so then go for it Dems and Independents. The Republicans created this situation themselves by having an "open" primary.
I plan to vote in the Georgia Republican primary on Super Tuesday and vote for the most extreme "non Romney" candidate on the ballot. I would prefer the most whacked out, weird (although that covers the entire slate of GOP candidates) and insane GOPer be on the ballot against Obama.

(1,318 posts)I certainly do not like the repug candidates, but I believe throwing it to Santorum is dangerous for Dems to do. I really dislike Santorum as I am from Pennsylvania and I know this guy would sell out his own mother to further himself. It is like voting in the devil so his demon angel does not get it. Do not think the general public is wise enough to not vote for Santorum as president if the repug primaries put him as the candidate as Bush got in there twice. In my view Santorum is a very callous and dangerous man and it is playing with fire for any Dem to vote for him in a primary. I do not like the idea of our country jumping into the fire to spite the frying pan. Neither are worthy as they are repugs, but there's a real good chance you are making it worse by voting for Santorum.

(6,279 posts)Frankly, Romney is the one guy in the clown car who is capable of being merely an awful and not downright catastrophic president. Giving the Taliban support just to prolong the primary season is playing with fire. My rule of gambling is never to bet what you can't afford to lose, and we can't afford to lose what we would if Santorum managed to upset Obama.

(1,712 posts)Yes. We all love the idea of a prolonged campaign. The Rethug uncertainty. The gnashing of teeth. The slow, mutually assured destruction.
HOWEVER - every time Icky Ricky wins or even comes in #2 with a small margin, he's given legitimacy. People, drag that bastard down! If you are helping him in any way to legitimize his diarrhea of the brain, or possibly keep trying for the presidency or any other office, you should be very ashamed. You deal with slime like him by running it out of town on a rail, making them too embarrassed, or embarrassing, to ever have another day in the political limelight.
