I don't actually see it "hurting" Bernie. I don't think the use of the term will cause many people to be genuinely outraged. And the ones fomenting all the supposed "outrage" are already voting against Bernie.

The main reason use of the term is so unfortunate in the context is that it's so likely to become "the story," distracting from what's important.

Paul Song has apologized. I wasn't familiar with him, but it looks like he has been a positive force. (e.g., executive dir. courage campaign https://www.couragecampaign.org/who-we-are). I'd cut him some slack

Nah, I lived there for a year between grad schools and then moved upstate. That was mild at a political rally.

I don't think a Clinton supporter here considers it a good day unless they get a happy feeling from being poutraged over something to do with Sanders, his supporters, or endorsers.

And a lot of blowing things WAY out of proportion.

Tragically, it's an effective means to distract from the things that matter, so I imagine we'll be seeing a lot more. We just have to keep dragging attention back to the things that are truly outrageous, like the outrageous distribution of wealth, outrageous lack of access to health care.... you know the list.

If the noise machine tries to turn this into another distracting "story" being "discussed" far and wide, it will only be that -- a distraction. As the said, I don't see many who hear about this being genuinely outraged. And the ones who fain outrage are very unlikely to ever support Sanders anyway.

The hard left has a tone problem that alienates regular voters...just like the far right does. Aggressive ideologues tend to be rude aggressive people. Just because you think your cause is noble it doesn't entitle you to go about bullying others who disagree with you. This isn't directed at anyone specific, so no need to break out the martyrdom schtick.

learning that the Clintons are actually neo liberals who sell out to the 1%, but have to be spanked for someone using the word whore. Admitedly a very poor choice of words while a female is running for president, but the misplaced outrage is notable, stark and insulting as per usual.
