2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumAs a Jew, I find Hillary's Israel support creepy in the evangelical way. Not something to be admired
Of course for Jews, Israel is also a divisive and complex issue. We are not monolithic and do not vote for someone just because they are Jewish.
I entirely support the right of Israel to exist, but I do not like to see support of militant people like Netanyahu and I would like to see a more compassionate stance taken such as what I think Bernie Sanders will do.
If Hillary fans are pleased to be getting the Jewish vote because of Neocon Israel positions, that's great, but do not make the mistake of thinking this is a vote earned by any kind of Progressive credibility. Quite the opposite.
And my message for the non-Jews on DU reading this is: Do not lump us all together and understand that Israel and policies toward Israel are a fault line in the Jewish community.
For me, being a Jew is about ethics and that is why I am with Bernie Sanders.

(57,349 posts)I've also seen several articles where Bernie was basically called a bad Jew for not being hawkish enough, one poster earlier today linked to a nasty article in the NY Post that went even further, thankfully she deleted it.

(53,961 posts)It is why the saying "Two Jews, three opinions" is so accurate. LOL!
I think it is important to point out that just because Jews are supporting Clinton, doesn't mean they are supporting her because of her positions on Israel. From most surveys and historical data regarding voting patterns amongst our people, Israel only ranks high among the conservatives, who usually vote Republican. Among the democratic Jews, while Israel may be important, we generally are more moved by social issues, and some economic issues.

(37,549 posts)Ethics? Most New Yorkers I know have looked at Bernie Sander's ethics on guns.....bit of a zhulik, that one was the phrase used.

I am a member of my local Ethical Humanist Society. Many of our members are Jews cut from that same cloth.

(30,099 posts)most Jews...we're liberal minded...staunchly so. No doubt Israeli policy and how that translates
to American support goes beyond ethnicity and religion..it is a complicated relationship which involves
our foreign policy outlook overall on the ME, much of which I do not agree with, not just Israel policy.
Israel's right to exist is not negotiable, but neither should a viable state for the Palestinians.
I have been a strong critic of Israeli policy as a member of DU and as much as I
support Bernie, my vote for him is not because I think he will transform Israeli policy
should he be president...not that I believe he would be biased, if anything he would be
the most fair, imo. I believe what Bernie wants to begin in this country starting here
at home will be his focus and rightly so, and a healthy functioning democracy here will
later transcend to a wiser foreign policy. I love his vision for our nation and why I am such a
strong supporter.
With that said, Bernie would never be a threat to Israel should he be president, it
is an absurd idea. I have read many critics claiming he might be a Chomsky in disguise,
as if that is a terrible thing to be. But regardless, he is not going to do anything to harm Israel
and of course, you're quite right, Jews will vote for or against him for many reasons, primarily
about their own interests at home.
