Also, I'd be able to release the whole thing, not just a 1040. Oh, and if I did release just a 1040, I'd know that that was all I released, and not pretend that I released a full return. And I'd sure as hell know the difference between a tax return and a Senate financial disclosure form.
Yet somehow it's taking Bernie and Jane months. And this guy wants to run the most powerful country in the world?

(9,070 posts)and for the last decade or two I have electronic copies.
If Bernie "cannot produce" them, then he's hiding something.

(9,070 posts)maybe you can tell us what Bernie is hiding?
Does he have an account in the islands? We know he and Jane have investments in energy companies. I got rid of my VALIC (part of AIG) years ago because of their investments.
A college president and a Senator who do their own taxes on a short form? If you believe that then I have some land for you in Florida.
You show up here and I'll be glad to show you that I have every return to the mid-70s signed by a CPA.

(7,815 posts)If that's the case, he's known that long that he would be expected to produce some tax returns.
He's said that he uses Mrs. Sanders, not a paid preparer. This makes it a little more difficult. (I discovered recently both the IRS and H&R Block can print off four years of back tax records for you in a trice. Very helpful.)
But I, too, could reach into a paper file, spend some time struggling with my scanner, and send copies off to anyone who had a legitimate right to ask for them. On the other hand, campaigning is terrifically time-and energy-consuming. But even so, I'm sure Mr. & Mrs. Sanders will supply tax returns.
My question is, what do we expect to learn from them? We know Mr. Sanders' policy positions, experience, and political philosophy. What will his tax returns add to this picture?

(3,457 posts)There is no legal requirement for the candidate to disclose tax returns. Just as there is no legal requirement for Hillary to realease her $675,000 Goldman Sachs speeches.

(1,236 posts)Not really sure that's who we need leading the country right now, but nothing wrong with it. The world needs good accountants too.
Fwiw, if someone asked me to release 10 years' of tax returns, I would:
1) delay as long as possible
2) delay some more
3) spend 3 or 4 hours neck deep in files cabinets, boxes of unfiled papers (not to mention the ones with permanent residence on my bedroom floor) searching desperately for anything that looked tax-related or might be the scrap of paper with my login to the tax system)
4) shout/scream/cry/throw things
5) try to get that old laptop working that I'm pretty sure I used to file a few years ago so maybe there's a copy on there?
6) cry some more
7) give up
But that's just me

(20,709 posts)But being able to produce tax returns doesn't require being a good accountant, it just requires some basic human competence.
PaulaFarrell
(1,236 posts)And I gave you a compliment.
The fact is, a lot of people don't really care about paperwork. I think tthere are more important things to judge 'human competence'. You judge a farmer on his crops not his aaccounts, and a leader on his vision, not whether he's OCD about his taxes.
