2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumWhat new ground will be covered at the debate tonight?
I think Wolf is the moderator.
I'm sure he will ask about "unqualified " and "corporate whore" gates.
But, policy position wise, is there anything new that hasn't already been discussed at previous debates?

Good night to watch something on PBS.

(1,163 posts)And I think that one resonates.
Hillary's resume and variety of offices held helps her, never mind that she did a shitty job at each one and created conditions that helped ISIS.
Bernie could use that to his advantage, that he has more time in and far fewer blunders.
What good is experience if you were a fuck up while in office?

(24,411 posts)Bernie is in the cat-bird seat when it comes to the fracking issue.
He has come out adamantly opposed to fracking and has been consistent on this issue. Fracking is such an important issue in upstate New York. To many in upstate New York, it matters so much that they are single-issue candidates.
Zephyr Teachout ran against Cuomo and surprised everyone in NY when she secured 35 percent of the vote. She didn't win the election, but the numbers are fascinating and great news for Bernie. Teachout won several counties in upstate New York because of the fracking issue alone. She was against fracking while Cuomo wasn't (similar to the Bernie/Hillary dynamic).
Teachout won several of those counties with 70 percent of the vote. That's huge.
Bernie is going to do well in those same counties. Count on it.

(2,760 posts)I could pretty much answer the questions for both candidates. At this point, both candidates are just hoping the other one screws up.

So no matter what the topic, Sanders will just spout the same shallow pabulum.

(24,411 posts)This is one of the most important debates, thus far. It's crucial that each candidate do extremely well.
I'm sure both of them are sweating bullets.
I've noticed that Hillary has pretty much kept to the same pre-debate strategy. In the past, she has spent the week preceding the debate, attacking Bernie. Then, when she shows up at the debate, she's cordial, measured and in control--even trying to be funny and sweet.
That is actually a very effective tactic. Your opponent spends the week preparing for battle and pissed off, and they arrive at the debate with a bit of adrenaline coursing through their veins--prepared for the pre-debate attacks to continue at the debate.
So...when those attacks don't happen, it can throw you off a bit.
I've noticed that the Clinton camp has been relatively quiet this week. I think it's fair to say that the "Destroy" tactics they used last week, have been turned off, like a spigot. Last week was rabid. This week is quieter.
This is why---I predict that Hillary will attack like a junkyard dog. I think she'll employ the opposite strategy that she used in other debates. There's got to be a reason for the unusually low level of bile coming from the Clinton camp. Isn't everything a ploy with her?
I hope that Bernie is prepared for attacks, and even for some new cutting talking points (most probably lies). Both camps are aware that Bernie is leaving for Italy after the debate. He'll of course be able to fight back at any lies, through the press. But it's not the same as being there in NY. If I were Bernie, I'd be prepared for a shit storm from her.

(2,166 posts)Maybe tonight is the night.
Bernie can explain single payer and how he will pay for it,
and Hillary can follow with why her plan is better.
Bernie can explain why we need 15 dollars an hour and Hill can counter with...
whatever her view is this week.
Bernie can explain how we will break up the banks --mentioning that
William Black, the leading expert in the area, is on board-- and Hillary
can read that transcript.
Bernie can rail against the real evils of the TPP and Hillary can explain
why she called it 'the gold standard of trade agreements" in her book.
That will be all the time they have for questions.
Then Hillary can drop out of the race and prepare for the FBI
while Bernie prepares to shred Trump in the General.

(24,411 posts)A lot has transpired on the FBI investigation, since the last debates.
According to a late March article from the LA Times, the FBI was set to interview her aids "within days". Those interviews may be happening and if they are--I'm sure this issue has become very real for the Clinton camp. Those interviews will give them clearer insight into the case the FBI has against Hillary and the direction and tone of the FBI.
I have wondered if Obama's very public remarks about the investigation weren't in response to the Clinton camp begging for some PR help--after those interviews revealed that the FBI is not playing games.
If that is true, it will be interesting how she responds, if the subject does come up.
I doubt we'll see any, "That's not going to happen!" remarks this time.

(2,166 posts)If Hill does somehow manage to avoid indictment, please
explain to us how that possibly came to be.
I have been pondering how she might escape justice
