Paul Y. Song

[IMG][/IMG]

http://www.pnhp.org/news/2016/february/paul-song-on-the-real-debate-we-should-be-having

Recently, a fierce debate has been ignited within the Democratic Party regarding the merits and feasibility of a single-payer Medicare-for-All universal healthcare system. Some liberal commentators have summarily dismissed Senator Sanders' proposal as politically unrealistic or as greatly lacking in details while championing a slightly improved status quo, and other political surrogates have spread GOP-like untruths that have no place in any honest discussion.

Regardless of ones' individual beliefs on Medicare-for-All, it is crucial to note some indisputable facts regarding the Affordable Care Act (ACA) and the current status quo:

**SNIP**

The real debate Democrats should be having should not be about whether single payer, a highly successful proven system in so many industrialized nations, is the solution, but rather how we can collectively come together to overcome the corporate forces that derailed the ACA from providing a public option, drug price controls and insurance rate regulation, and how we get to the ultimate goal of Medicare for All.

**SNIP**

At the same time there were over 3,300 registered healthcare lobbyists for the 535 members of congress who spent more in total than what was spent on the entire Bush-Kerry election to influence the legislation. Many of these lobbyists were former congressional staffers including two former chiefs of staff to then Finance Committee Chairman Senator Max Baucus. Many legislators from both sides of the aisle received lots of money, but it was Baucus who received over $1.4 million and held up the legislation in his committee for so long that Senator Ted Kennedy was not alive to vote for it.

**SNIP**

Sadly, the biggest major insurers also recognize the benefits and efficiencies of a single payer system and have begun to rapidly consolidate through huge mergers, which further eliminates what little competition consumers have. So the question is not whether we will have single payer, but whether it will be administered by one ruthless for-profit entity that will keep all realized savings for its shareholders while continuing to gauge, deny, and shortchange its patients. Or whether it will be a Medicare-for-all, which will use the cost savings of administrative efficiency and bulk purchasing power to increase coverage and benefits for everyone, to provide the humane and comprehensive health care system we as a society truly deserve and already pay for.

It's the 1% vs. The 99%. There is a war. There needs to be a revolution. The status quo does not serve the majority of Americans.

He is on the correct side. He is on OUR side!

I have nothing more to say.

Dear Illinois Single-Payer Activists,

If you haven't heard the breaking news, its big: *Speaker Nancy Pelosi has
committed to bringing single-payer for a full debate and vote on the floor
of the House of Representatives!*

The vote will come in the form of an amendment to the House Leadership's
incremental health legislation. The amendment, offered by Rep. Anthony
Weiner (D-NY), would effectively remove the entire existing health plan and
replace it with the text of H.R. 676, Rep. John Conyers' single-payer
legislation.

The Leadership Conference for Guaranteed Health Care is immediately
mobilizing to marshal maximum support for the Weiner Single Payer Amendment.
*Health Care for All Illinois is inviting all single payer groups to an
emergency planning meeting to inform supporters about these national
developments and strategize for delivering the Illinois Congressional
Delegation.*

Here are the meeting details

Single-Payer National Strategy Meeting
Wednesday, August 12, 2009 | 6:30 p.m.
NNOC Headquarters
850 W. Jackson | Suite 750

We will also have a conference call number for non-metro activists. Stay
tuned for details. Please feel free to email me with any questions.

Nick

*Funeral service for Nicholas Skala*

A funeral service for Nicholas Skala will be held this Thursday, August 13,
at 7:30 p.m. at the Lauterburg-Oehler Funeral Home, 2000 East Northwest
Highway, Arlington Heights IL 60004.

Visitation will take place from 3 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.

Nick's parents, Judith and Ronald Skala, have invited all of his friends to
attend. They also say that, in lieu of flowers, contributions in Nick's
memory be made to Physicians for a National Health Program, 29 E. Madison
St., Suite 602, Chicago IL 60602.

Sympathy cards can be sent to Judith and Ronald Skala at 12215 Lakewood Glen
Ct., Cypress, TX 77429. Condolence messages sent to PNHP or the funeral home
will be forwarded to Nick's family.

PNHP's statement on Nick's death, which was released Monday, appears below.
------------------------------

*Tragic news from PNHP*

We at Physicians for a National Health Program are terribly saddened to
report the sudden and unexpected loss of one of our staff members, Nicholas
Skala, who died over the weekend in his Chicago home at the age of 27 of
unknown causes.

Nick was one of our nation's most gifted and dedicated advocates for
single-payer national health insurance -- for truly universal, comprehensive
and quality care for all. His incisive mind, wide-ranging knowledge and
formidable skills of argument were devoted entirely to bringing about a
better world for everyone.

To his friends and co-workers, he was an extremely witty and compassionate
human being, and a great source of inspiration and encouragement.

Nick had only recently returned to Chicago from two months in Washington,
D.C., where he contributed significantly to the cause of single-payer health
reform in multiple ways. He was committed to working for PNHP in our Chicago
office during the next six weeks prior to his return to his classes at
Northwestern University Law School.

His death is a heavy blow to our organization and to the entire single-payer
movement.

We at PNHP extend our deepest and most sincere condolences to Nick's family
and friends. A more extensive obituary and details of any memorial
arrangements will be made available to you when they become known.

We vow to redouble our efforts to bring about Nick Skala's vision.

Paul Y. Song, M.D. is currently the head of North American Operations and Chief Medical officer for ATGen Global a private biotech company that manufactures and supplies a wide array of recombinant proteins and antibodies worldwide with a focus on immunosurveillance.

He is also a minority shareholder and the former Chief medical officer of Berg Pharma which currently has three drugs in clinical trials in the US and has signed strategic partnership deals with many academic, private, and non-government research organizations to help expedite drug and target discovery using its patented multi-omics/artificial intelligence platform.

To help his sister in law get out of North Korea.

Sounds about right for a Sanders surrogate. Ungrateful hypocrite.

No. A Corporate Whore is someone who sells themselves out for the money alone. They are willing to compromise themselves, their integrity, and the welfare of others for money and influence alone.

Not everyone who works for a corporation is a corporate whore.

Song is not a sell out. He is not compromising his integrity. He is not 'whoring' himself for money and influence. He is doing his profession. He is also speaking out passionately for Medicare for all. He has done so consistently EVEN while working at corporations.

Y'all are not this simple or stupid. We both know that. It is an act. It is a game for y'all. But I won't allow you to push bullshit memes and lies. So buckle up, we are in for a bumpy few months still to go.

It is not how much he makes. It is not that he gets paid for treating cancer patients. What it is is this. He has integrity. He fights for all patients even those who are not his own when he continues to push for Medicare for all. He does not 'whore' himself for money. He does not 'whore' himself for influence. He doesn't withhold medications so that he can make a greater profit. He doesn't abandon patients for more profit. In short, he is an excellent surrogate for Sanders despite his passionate words that y'all keep twisting into outrage more than the reality of our sorry start of medical care in this country instead!
