2016 Postmortem

Bernie Sanders is elected President.
Since Congress has refused to begin hearings on President Obama's nominee, Senator Sanders requests President Obama withdraw his nominee.
Under protest, President Obama complies.
President Sanders announces his nomination for the Supreme Court: former President Barack Obama.
And the crowd goes WILD!!!!!!

(14,157 posts)That is his right. Sorry, to disagree with your dream. Hillary can name Obama to the court to fill the next vacancy.

(1,163 posts)Not sure that Obama wants that role but the Sanders elected President is a clear winner!
Obama might be better out and about, he's charming and could do some serious community organizing (except for all the secret service around him).
We SOOOO need that, community based programs.
The fact that so many still don't know how bad things are is very concerning.

(3,017 posts)Obama has shown himself to be a corporatist, not somebody who could be counted on to overturn Citizens United.
My first choice for a Bernie pick for the Supreme Court would be Zephyr Teachout, who has written a book on the history of money in politics in the United States titled "Corruption in America: From Benjamin Franklin's Snuff Box to Citizens United." Teachout is a summa cum laude graduate of Duke Law School who is an Associate Professor of Law at Fordham University. She is in her early 40's and getting money out of politics is her political passion. She got 36% of the Democratic primary vote for NY governor against Andrew Cuomo in 2014 running with virtually no money.

(10,559 posts)Of course DNC changed it for Hillary, but I disagree with you about this. He has also repeatedly spoken out against it.

(3,017 posts)No thanks. I'd prefer Obama get rich on the lecture circuit instead of serving on the Supreme Court. And of course the Republicans would lay down across the tracks to block his appointment.

(72,790 posts)And not in a bad way. But there's other folks out there that should be considered.
No more Bush. No more Clinton. No more Obama.

(1,359 posts)No surprise there. Bernie's been disrespecting Obama since at least 2012, why should he change his tune now, right?

(10,559 posts)President Obama's pick of Judge Garland.
IamMab
(1,359 posts)Under what Constitutional authority would President-elect Bernie Sanders instruct sitting President Barack Obama to withdraw a nomination he submitted? I'd like to see the legal foundation of this argument.
IdaBriggs
(10,559 posts)There is also no legal foundation for the level of Republican obstructionism that is happening right now.
President Obama won the right to have HIS Supreme Court nominees appointed to the Supreme Court during the ENTIRE tenure of his term.
If the Republicans refuse to abide by that in a timely fashion (and Judge Garland appears to be perfectly qualified), then I dream of the joy of shoving that back onto them by putting Former President Obama there instead. There is precedent for this - President Taft.

(1,359 posts)So glad that you can grudgingly admit that Obama won his authority through 2 elections. It totally didn't look like pulling teeth to get you to say that, clearly.
That still doesn't explain why you're pushing the dishonest narrative that Bernie should be allowed to ask him to withdraw his nomination if it's not confirmed before Nov 6th. I don't care if Bernie wants to nominate Obama or Ghandi or Buddha or Jesus. He. Has. No. Right.
Obama is the President until mid-January. Deal with it better than through nonsensical fantasy wish-fulfillment like this.
IdaBriggs
(10,559 posts)It bloody well shouldn't have looked like pulling teeth, since I am a strong Obama supporter.
If you can't wrap your head around the delicious irony of putting Obama in if the Republicans continue to obstruct for another SEVEN MONTHS then I can't help you. Perhaps your secret plan to get the Republicans to do their jobs is going to magically transpire, but the nomination expires at the end of President Obama's term, so if that little twist in my little dream will calm your overwrought prose, by all means, let's change it.
"President Obama leaves office with the permanent historical mark of being the first President whose Supreme Court nominee was ignored by Congress. President Sanders promptly nominates him for the vacancy and everyone cheers."
On second thought, your plan sucks. I'm sticking with my original one instead.

(1,359 posts)It's disappointing that you're so biased that you don't understand this. Enjoy your dream, though. You'll have to wake up sooner or later.

(1,359 posts)Tired of people who can't win elections telling the people who can what they're doing wrong. This country is nothing like Vermont, or Seattle, or San Fransisco. (I'd offer more places under progressive rule, but there aren't any!)
Sanders progressives don't seem to want to win through democracy. They know they don't have the numbers or support to do that. They want to impose, over the protests of anyone who wants to disagree. That's not America.

(1,507 posts)Many are just becoming politically aware and believe everything should be tilted in Bernie's favor. If it's not, they get angry as evidenced by the harassment of superdelegates and democratic party officials and constant bleating about stolen elections when Bernie doesn't win every state.
IdaBriggs
(10,559 posts)Then I realized that you've only been here a few months, so you probably didn't realize whose thread you are actually participating in, so let me introduce myself.
Hi. My name is Ida Briggs. I have been a member of the Democratic Underground since 2004. You might not remember, but we had a few "problems" with that election. With the help of fellow DU folk, I worked to get the state of New Hampshire recounted --
http://archive.wired.com/politics/security/news/2004/11/65736?currentPage=all
and while I am not as passionately involved in the topic this election (I am currently working on public health issues that are very near and dear to me), I am paying all kinds of attention to issues involving election integrity because it should matter to every competent adult in the country.
So when you say STUPID STUFF like "constant bleating about stolen elections" which isn't even a subject of this thread, I find myself personally offended because it reeks of ignorance, entitlement and stupidity. What you *SHOULD* be aware of is that "record turnout" during the primaries and issues ranging from voter caging to unexplained computer glitches switching registration isn't just a "Bernie Sanders issue" -- it is a blatant warning shot about possible problems in November.
And while I can appreciate the passion you have for your candidate and willingness to participate on a message board of this nature, this isn't a place where we insult each other which is why I am deliberately editing this post to not call you some of the things I was originally thinking before I realized you were just "uninformed" about who you were speaking to.
I am sure you didn't realize how insulting that "constant bleating about stolen elections" actually was. But for future bonus reference, you might want to check on the "age" of the poster here before you decide we are "just becoming politically aware".
