Debate coach: Bad night for Bernie

Hillary Clinton: A-
She still interrupts too much. No improvement there.
She still has a terrible answer to the question of why she won't release her Wall Street speech transcripts. But Sanders won't release all his tax returns either. (They're both still ducking questions with answers that don't pass the smell test.)
However, Clinton did have a better debate in some significant ways. The first was in demanding Sanders produce examples of her being influenced by Wall Street, as he has so often charged. She asked for an example, and when he couldn't come up with one, she said, "This is a phony attack designed to raise questions with no evidence or support... he cannot come up with any example, because there is no example."

...

Bernie Sanders: D
First, he had nothing new. By this point in the debate cycle, Sanders should have been ready with specifics on how he'd pay for his proposals without raising the debt, hurting businesses or crushing the middle class. But he was not prepared with this.
He couldn't specify how he'd break up the banks, which he said he'd let them do themselves somehow.

Imagine that.

A Hillary fan distorts the debate. Didn't expect that...

Todd Graham is director of debate at Southern Illinois University. His teams have won national championships for three years, and he's been recognized twice as the national debate coach of the year. The opinions expressed in this commentary are his.

The debate coach is a Hillary fan. Do you have proof of that?

If such proof is lacking I humbly request you peer into your conscience, call on your better angels, and apologize to Professor Graham for your attack on his integrity.

Thank you in advance.

REASON FOR ALERT

This post is disruptive, hurtful, rude, insensitive, over-the-top, or otherwise inappropriate.

ALERTER'S COMMENTS

The poster has been asked 5+ times to provide proof that the debate coach is Hillary supporter. He hasn't provided evidence to back up his claim. The poster is clearly spreading false information and lies.

You served on a randomly-selected Jury of DU members which reviewed this post. The review was completed at Sat Apr 16, 2016, 02:22 AM, and the Jury voted 1-6 to LEAVE IT.

Juror #1 voted to LEAVE IT ALONE
Explanation: Let it be, but these internecine squabbles grow tiresome. Sanders partisans need to dial it back for the good of DU, the Democratic Party, the nation, and the planet. Enough already. "Hillary Fan" shouldn't be a slur on this website. This place is toxic.
Juror #2 voted to LEAVE IT ALONE

Juror #3 voted to LEAVE IT ALONE
Explanation: Jeez Louise. C'mon.
Juror #4 voted to HIDE IT
Explanation: No explanation given
Juror #5 voted to LEAVE IT ALONE
Explanation: If we hid every post that failed to back up it's claims there would be not much to read here...this is a silly alert.
Juror #6 voted to LEAVE IT ALONE
Explanation: This is the GD:primary forum. Nothing I can see is hide worthy. FYI, I also am a Hillary supporter, but the point of jury duty is not based on who I am for or against, but whether a post merits a hide or not, and it doesn't

especially the blatant contradiction on climate change. I pointed this out to my wife as it happened.

I'm starting to believe that Bernie actually doesn't have all that much brain power. He's a simplifier, sort of a la Ronald Reagan, but he has nowhere near the way with language that the "great communicator" as they used to call him did.

Bernie stated a position which amazed many pundits. He advocated for Palestine and thus broke with the traditional Israel-toadying position of most pusillanimous presidential candidates. There will be no chance of peace until America is an honest broker opposing the expansion of Israeli settlements and helping Palestine to overcome gross poverty and unemployment Israeli military reactions have been disproportionate and devastating to Palestinian civilians. Bernie courageously stated that unequivocally, perhaps at the risk of winning the NY primary. That is the difference. He states the truth whether it is politically convenient or not.

But the fact that he left out Sander's line about superpredators being racist is troublesome. That was the best line of the debate. To completely ignore that shed some negative light on his evaluation of this debate.

I thought Clinton had a good debate. This was not an A-/D debate. Not even close to that lopsided. If he had given Sanders a B, I might think he was being even handed. A D? That's just ridiculous. His pushing of the transcripts was very powerful.

I was on the debate team in high school.

His assessment was a bit harsh. I only posted it as an antidote to the "Hillary got clobbered" threads and posts that permeated this board this morning. Even if someone hates Hillary they should be honest enough to concede she's an adept communicator.

So I knew him from the college debate circuit (I was a debate GTA and then coached at the college level for several years).

I think it was a great debate last night. I thought they both did well at different times in the debate. I didn't flow the debate or take notes to get an overall impression, but it was relatively even. A-/D is just not close.

His answer was correct. When the government says that something must be broken up (as they have done in the past with monopolies), it is not up to the government to decide *how* that breakup is to be done. The company is supposed to come up with their own plan that they think will address the concerns, submit that plan to the government, and then the government can approve it (or not, if they think it does not adequately address the concern). It is not the job of the government to create the plan. So Sanders was exactly right in the debate, when his answer to how they would be broken up was:

"the banks themselves can figure out what they want to sell off. I don't know that it's appropriate that the Department of Treasury to be making those decisions."
