How long has Sanders been earning money from nuclear waste dumping?

Their Schedule C shows $4900 in “business income” to Jane Sanders as an appointed commissioner of the Texas Low-Level Radioactive Waste Compact Commission, a bi-state regulatory body that oversees shipments of radioactive waste from Vermont to the Lone Star state.

http://www.nationalmemo.com/tax-transparency-after-expansive-vow-sanders-releases-only-2014-return/

Bernie voted for the legislation authorizing this practice.

Here is the purpose of this particular group.

Establishing Statute: 10 V.S.A. § 7062

Department: Public Service

Description: The Commission shall prepare, adopt, and implement contingency plans for the disposal and management of low-level radioactive waste in the event that the compact facility should be closed. Any plan which requires the host state to store or otherwise manage the low-level radioactive waste from all the party states must be approved by at least four host state members of the commission.

She is an alternate member - maybe as the waste is coming from Vermont they needed a Vermontian...

I am still researching - however I have to say so far seems legit.

Point #1 This is a commercial enterprise and not something Vermount set up

http://www.wcstexas.com/facilities/compact-waste-facility/

Our Facilities
Compact Waste Facility

compact-waste
Overview

Operational since spring of 2012, the Texas Compact Waste Facility (CWF) is owned and licensed by the state of Texas, operated by Waste Control Specialists. The WCS facility in western Andrews County is the only commercial facility in the United States licensed to dispose of Class A, B and C Low-level Radioactive Waste (LLRW) in the past 40 years.

The member states of the Texas Compact Commission are Texas and Vermont. As the host/party states, Texas and Vermont are providing a solution to the long term need for disposal of LLRW. The CWF is also available for the 34 U.S. states that do not have access to a compact disposal facility. Out of compact generators, however, must submit an import petition to the Texas Compact Commission for approval prior to shipping. The State of Texas also limits total non-compact waste disposed at the CWF to 30% of licensed capacity.

CWF Capabilities include:

2,310,000 cubic feet and 3,890,000 curies of disposal space
Accepts LLRW that is generated in a host state or party state
Accepts LLRW that is not generated in a host state or party state, but has been approved for importation to the state by the Texas Compact Commission

For more information on the Compact Waste Facility’s capabilities, review the CWF Generator Handbook below.

If you are unsure of whether or not your disposal needs can be met at WCS, please, call our West Texas Office for consultation at (888) 789-2783 or (432) 525-8500.

Many of us have been living near the spent rods for decades and, for the most part, are totally unaware of their existence in the area. Someone has to protect them forever, though - not Bernie's fault - and that activity by itself provides very well-paying jobs. In this particular instance, I think it makes lots of sense. The Vermont Yankee Nuclear Plant operated for decades along the banks of the Connecticut River. Any accident would have affected many big cities to the south. Now that it's decommissioned, it doesn't make sense to keep the hazardous waste next to the river given the potential for flooding in the area.

The environmental group has been trying to get the state to reverse its permit for WCS for years, mainly because the group was upset that state regulators never gave it a chance for what’s called a “contested case hearing” – basically a courtroom-style public hearing where citizens and groups can challenge license proposals.
