2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumWow- so many posts, so many wrong...He DID go, he DID speak, he DID meet w/the Pope.
But join in again any time - tell us again - what will not happen. Tell us what can not be done, what will not get done.
Don't settle for mediocrity, for questionable ethics, for questionable wavering positions, for questionable judgement.
There is no need.

(23,272 posts)ROME U.S. Democratic presidential candidate Sen. Bernie Sanders says he met privately with Pope Francis during his overnight trip here, his spokesman said.
The meeting took place at the papal residence early Saturday, according Sanders spokesman Michael Briggs.
A Vatican source said the meeting was not a chance encounter and had been planned.
The Sanders campaign had been vague about the senator's itinerary here following his address Friday to a Vatican conference. Francis left Rome later Saturday for Greece, where he is visiting migrants stuck on the island of Lesbos. The reticence about a Sanders meeting may be an attempt to avoid the perception that Francis is endorsing Sanders or otherwise involving himself in American politics.

(42,862 posts)And it was while the Pontiff was LEAVING! Hardly the formal meeting that everyone was led to believe would be happening.
I can understand why Bernie's campaign and supporters want to characterize it that way. Such wording and use of the phrase "met with" does make it sound more important than it really was. I guess I can't blame them for trying.
But, I'm sure it was an exciting moment for Bernie. (I haven't ready any reports on what the Pope thought about it.)

(31,700 posts)Columbia University Professor Jeffrey Sachs told Reuters that the meeting took place in the Vatican guesthouse where the pope lives and where Sanders had spent the night after addressing a Vatican conference on social justice.
Sachs said Sanders, who was accompanied by his wife, and the pope spoke for about five minutes. Sachs, his wife and a Vatican official were also in the room.
Sachs, who has advised the United Nations on climate change, said Sanders thanked the pope for his pronouncements on the need for morality in the global economy and statements in defense of the environment.
"The pope thanked the senator for coming to the meeting and for coming to speak about the moral economy," Sachs said.

But don't worry, they'll figure out a more 'reasonable' sounding way to downplay the meeting.
"It was only 5 minutes!" "Did they talk about the Church's stance on women or gays?"
Oh, or the one I saw about "Yeah, and he (the Pope) met with Kim Davis!"
