Bernie's Pope pandering is an amazing thing

...it's one weird spectacle, one of the all-time looney campaign stunts.

DAYS before the NY primary which is a MUST WIN for Sanders, he's nowhere to be found in the state. He's off globetrotting to the Vatican to MEET THE POPE!

After a few clerical feints and some Papal dodges, the two actually met! Who knew he would pull this stunt off? Not me.

But, this is the thing, pretending this wasn't a campaign stunt is as flighty as the podium bird. The campaign funds spent on the joy ride should tell supporters to ixnay on the talk about some grand purpose. I'm still not clear how this is a justified, legitimate expenditure of campaign funds, but I'd think you could get away with it by saying it was a chance for Bernie to show off his international relations chops. A textbook demonstration on how to rope a Pope who already said nope.

But look, you have to step back from the temporary buzz that one might get from witnessing this event - a buzz not unlike the joyful anxiety that comes with watching a baby take a few steps and just as quickly falls back down again on its tush - step back and ask yourself what the heck anyone other than Sanders is supposed to get from this, much less the NY'ers who are poised to vote for one of our two candidates.

On it's face, the message evident here is that Sanders has the ability and will to reach out to the Vatican, get an invite, and, by God, meet the Pope. That was pretty impressive, I think, watching from a distance. You hope he wasn't an imposition on the Vatican, you know, hanging around the church lobby waiting to jump out and....well, that probably didn't happen, did it?

Oh well, congrats anyway, I guess. The implications of this are...unknown at this time. I think it's like the podium bird; you either see deep meaning in the spectacle, or you're just puzzled and bemused like me.

Oh, btw, Hillary was out and about in NY visiting Latino homes in Harlem at the same time Bernie was going all messianic. Go figure.

Better to address this on the shallow level of a cheap shot, than to bother looking into why sanders has had a long time interest in social and economic justice -- including in Latin America.

Political disagreement is fine. But moronic little cheap shot politics is....Well that's why so many people have become jaded and don't give a rats ass which party is in power , or which candidates are in office.

I do know - and can link to - facts that he did meet the Obamas, the Bidens, and that he shook only one hand in Congress - John Kerry's. (John and Teresa also briefly met him before he flew to the next stop and Kerry has regularly spoken to his foreign minister, who he met on a 2013 visit to the Vatican before Obama's. I don't think that the Vatican was one of the 131 countries HRC visited.

Perhaps you are trying to make up a new scandal to distract from the issues? That's what my money is on. The last faux outrage was the tax returns. That ended rather poorly for the easily outraged.

On the Vermont senator, Francis said he greeted Sanders on Saturday morning as he was leaving the Santa Marta, the hotel within Vatican grounds where the pope lives.

Sanders was staying at the same residence, because that’s where all participants in the Vatican conference he attended on Friday were spending the night. The only exceptions were Presidents Evo Morales of Bolivia and Rafael Correa of Ecuador, who stayed at their country’s embassy in Rome.

“This morning as I was leaving, Senator Sanders was there,” Francis said. “He knew I was coming out at that time, and he had the kindness to greet me.”

“When I came down, he introduced himself, I greeted him with a handshake, and nothing more,” the pope added. “It’s common courtesy, this is called common courtesy.

“If someone thinks that greeting someone is getting involved in politics,” he said, “I recommend that they find a psychiatrist.”

Didn't you mean movie star homes in Los Angeles? LOL - she could buy all the Latino homes for the take from that fundraiser.

Still a little humor is not a bad thing, and neither party seems worse for the wear, so props to the pandermeisters. But as stunts go this was a weird one.
