Apparently Sanders' meeting with the Pope was like a groupie stalking a rock star in a hotel lobby

Bernie Sanders has often declared himself a big fan of Pope Francis, so it’s no surprise that he deemed his brief meeting with the pontiff at the Vatican this morning “extraordinary.” While there are no photos of the two together, Sanders told reporters he was “incredibly appreciative” to have the honor of chatting exclusively with the religious leader, who he called a “beautiful man.”

To the Pope, however—well, even the word “meeting” seems to overstate how he saw their encounter. He made a point of clarifying that the handshake and pleasantries they exchanged should not be seen as a political endorsement.

“This morning when I was leaving, Senator Sanders was there,” he told reporters in Italian aboard the papal airliner today, after his visit to the refugee-filled Greek island of Lesbos. “He knew I was leaving at that time. I greeted him, his wife, and another couple who were there and were sleeping in Santa Martha."

Added the Pope, laughing, “If anyone thinks that greeting someone is getting involved in politics, I recommend that he look for a psychiatrist.”

He had a meeting. So what! Get over it. He met the Pope, which the way is a big deal, and they exchanged niceties.

I went to Rome and saw Pope John Paul. I went to mass in the Basillica and he was present. I'm not a devout Catholic. I don't even go to church. My husband is Catholic and he does go to church. I am a former Catholic.

It was an experience that I never will forget. It was magical. There is just something there that is indescribable. There are no words to say how deeply moving and how inspiring it is.

The pettiness about Bernie Sanders saying meeting vs. Pope Francis saying greeting is just plain ugly. You people should just be ashamed of yourselves.

The Pope is no dummy. You can bet Bernie's party was informed where and when the Pope could meet him. It could not be a formal meeting as the Pope knows he cannot endorse a US candidate. He'd never do that openly.

If the Pope didn't want to meet Bernie, it would never have happened. And you know it, unless you are totally clueless.

He was invited and those invited were told, where to be to say hello. It's a formality, and it's like that for heads of state as well. If I was in the Vatican, and told he would be available, I would have made an effort to be where it was stated to be, as well. So would have Hillary.
