I was having this exact discussion with the spouse last week. Numbers don't just get stuck and stay there. They fluctuate.
Shenanigans.

It started out as curiosity... about two and a half weeks ago I, and many others, marveled at how Bernie Sanders had been able to whittle Hillary's lead in New York from a 43 point lead down to 7 and a half points. I was following the polling to see how much further he could whittle it down and looked forward to seeing Bernie pull ahead. But then something....odd.... happened. I went a week with no new polling data coming out, which, given the importance of the New York primary, I thought, well, ODD.
snip
After just a couple hours of research and going over polling procedures I started to become troubled. It appeared some of the polling in the last week or so taken in New York was done so in order to give a false appearance of majority support for Hillary Clinton. CNN as well as an NBC affiliate, the Wall Street Journal, and Marist all apparently targeted area's in New York which heavily favored Sec. Clinton in previous races including her Senate runs and the 2008 primary. Instead of having a broad base to poll, these organizations had apparently, and purposely, only polled in counties and demographic populations they knew had favored Clinton in the past.... I realized that if this turned out to be true, it would prove blatant manipulation of the process and polling data in order to misinform and suppress turnout for Bernie Sanders.

(24,411 posts)Have you noticed how polls are used on DU? They're a brazen attempt at demoralizing Sanders supporters.
I paid very close attention in Iowa, because I knew that most of the polls posted on DU were laughable, utter bullshit.
There were many polls that were so rigged to favor Clinton and their methodology was laughable. It was as if the poll was conducted to get a skewed, pro-Hillary result. No question.
Someone posted a Monmouth Poll that had Hillary winning Iowa by 20 points. 70 percent of those polled were over the age of 60!
60 percent were female.
Many, many polls that favor Clinton have been like this.
And the biggest problem? These inaccurate polls are rolled into the RCP average--further skewing more results.
Crazy.

I live in a state that turned GOP because Dems didn't come out as usual and assumed polls were accurate.

(24,411 posts)And people can get lazy if their candidate is far ahead.
However, cooked polls are another thing. Cooked polls showing false numbers--in which one candidate is beating another by 20+ points are often used as weapons.
I think this tactic has been neutered throughout the duration of the primary though. So many inaccurate polls that people no longer see them as reliable--and they vote or don't vote--irrespective of what these polls say.

(10,786 posts)Hmmmmm. Why are they constantly promoting bullshit polls showing Clinton far in the lead?
Could it be that all of these rigged polls discourage Sanders supporters from volunteering and voting as well as provide cover for all of the other Democratic party machine's vote suppression dirty tricks?

(24,411 posts)shenanigans, suppression, rigging, anomalies and all kinds of weird happenings in our Democratic primary.
What bothers me is that it appears that the polling is rigged. As this article indicates, much of the polling is done in areas and with demographics that favor Clinton.
Ok...why would someone be purposely skewing the polls to favor Clinton? One could argue that polling that favors Clinton could have a dampening effect on Bernie supporters, who may be dispirited and not turn out to vote.
On the other hand, maybe the polling is being forced to match a dirty final, rigged result?
What would happen if pre-primary polling favored Bernie and then Clinton won?
Notice how some states to exit polling and others don't? What's up with that?

I suspect that real polling would show a Bernie surge. And a lead.

Vote discrepancies
After the votes were initially counted on election night, certain districts near New York City were found to be missing their vote tallies for Obama.[2] The New York Times conducted a review of the unofficial results from the primary. They found that, among New York City's 6,106 election districts participating, 80 districts did not record a single vote for Obama, including heavily black districts like Harlem, as well as districts next to others where Obama had very favorable results. City election officials reviewed the vote tallies and found several inaccuracies. For example, in Harlem where Clinton led Obama 141 to 0, the recounted vote was counted as 261 to 136, Clinton.[3] In Brooklyn the primary night vote was 118 to 0, Clinton, whereas the recounted vote went 118 to 116, Clinton.[3]
Democratic leaders blamed the discrepancies on "human error" due to weary election officials on primary day. According to ABC News, however, other candidates such as John Edwards did not have this problem; it seemed to be almost exclusive to Obama.[4]
