The Hamptons, where Hillary feels at home

While talking up her desire to fight for the underdog, Clinton prefers to vacation where she fits in best — next to the one percent.

Last August, sitting outside of Hampton Chutney, a popular Indian “dosa” take-out joint in the well-heeled beach town of Amagansett, a group of women eating lunch were laughing and talking so loudly, other diners were distracted by the ruckus. There was only one giveaway that this was not your ordinary group of vacationers enjoying a get-together. “I saw a man with the earpiece,” one onlooker recalled. “That made me look closer.”

Hillary Clinton’s security detail may have gotten in the way of the former secretary of state completely blending in with her friends while on vacation last year. But overall, it was a relatively low-key summer for her — she had finished writing her memoir, and while anticipation was building over whether she would mount another campaign, she had yet to make a final decision about whether to run for president. A private citizen, Clinton ate her lunch without anyone interrupting her. “But you could have,” the onlooker recalled. “It was very casual. She was like a real local.”

Those days are likely behind her for now. As the Democratic front-runner broke from the campaign trail, where she has been dogged by the email scandal connected to her time at the State Department, and headed for her annual vacation in the Hamptons late this week, voters across the country are tuned in this time around.

The Clintons are reportedly staying in the same $50,000 a week beachfront mansion in Amagansett near film executive Harvey Weinstein’s spread, a seven-bedroom house with a lap pool and ocean access, they rented last year. Their daughter, Chelsea, and her family — fresh off a vacation boating and snorkeling with fashion designer Diane von Furstenberg and billionaire mogul Barry Diller in Sardinia — are also expected to join them. Clinton’s two brothers, Hugh and Tony Rodham, are also staying with the family for part of the vacation, a source said.
