2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumJust wondering what history books will say
about this country seriously considering for the office of President someone who is under investigation by the FBI and whose husband was impeached. Maybe they'll think that we had lost our minds???

(17,493 posts)If by some miracle we once again become a representative democracy or a constitutional republic, this time in our history will be viewed as the days when an oligarchy had managed to buy and own those we elect and send to Washington D.C. and was able to effectively run our nation.

(24,979 posts)I'm sure the 2016 story will not be about how the usual imperialists and corrupt bastards are in charge, even if one of them wins. The historically unusual phenomena are obviously Sanders and Trump. And on the latter they don't think "we" lost our mind but that a new stage in the long-running move to media fascism has been achieved.

(68,918 posts)bullshit now. The entire world laughs at us for our candidates and the nonissues we flog to death. The FBI has been "investigating" Presidents and candidates since its inception.

(24,692 posts)at any rate. Newt might be happy to hear that his handiwork is still being used by Democrats to go after Hillary 20 years later.
I know there is a lot of s**t being thrown against the wall here against both candidates just to see what might stick, but Bill's impeachment is about the lamest reason I have heard not to vote for Hillary.

(4,858 posts)...with a very great range of opinions, they will, cumulatively, say a very great many things about our times. Some will, no doubt, adhere to the interpretation you gave. Others will note that her husband's "impeachment" was an insane temper tantrum by a party already well-advanced in paranoia and dementia; than the "investigation" by the FBI is just one of an infinite number of similar probes of the candidate and her husband over a 25-year span, none of which, after great strum and drang, found anything particularly damaging; and that two of the alternatives to the candidate were Ted Cruz and Donald Trump. Let me repeat that: two of the alternatives were Ted Cruz and Donald Trump. I suspect that history will have a great deal more interest in *that* fact.

(1,415 posts)What does Bill Clinton's non-impeachment have to do with anything?
History will show Hillary defeated two crazies (Bernie and Trump) who thought slogans were the answer, and had no policies behind them.
