When you are only beating Louisiana, something is very wrong.
"As a result, only 19.7 percent of eligible New Yorkers cast a ballot, the second lowest voter turnout in the primaries after Louisiana, according to elections expert Michael McDonald. There were over 900 calls from frustrated voters to the Election Protection Coalition, more than in any other primary state.
Supporters of Hillary Clinton and Bernie Sanders should join forces to make it easier to vote, like they did recently when jointly suing Arizona. Restrictive voting laws hurt younger voters who are more likely to support Sanders and voters of color who are more likely to support Clinton. This cause would be good for the Democratic Party and, more importantly, for democracy. "

(45,319 posts)for that but not one excuse. The worst turnout of any Blue State, habitually. The State is bad but the NYC metro area is even worse in spite of their extended polling hours which are not allowed to the rural counties.
Restrictions, imitations and a pervasive apathy that comes from systemic rot and public distrust.

(45,319 posts)Every year, no matter what sort of election. NYC mayoral elections have dwindling participation, all their elections do, it is chronic voter apathy.

(45,319 posts)participation rates. Sinking ever lower. Bernie did a bit better in NY than Obama did, Hillary did about the same twice. It's not the candidates. It's NY's election systems that need to be reformed and the public trust restored.

(11,605 posts)Apparently many local boards of election, including mine, did not send out the cards they usually send reminding people of the election and where to vote.
I am not surprised at all by this.

(45,319 posts)best turnout when it is really among the worst. It's amazing to me. NYers claim to be all tied into their city but really most of them don't have a clue.

(11,605 posts)The polls are open until 9 pm, and I have never been asked to show ID at the polls. Also, we have a lot of polling places, so you don't have to wait forever to vote like some states. For all the problems that occurred yesterday, I did not hear much about long lines. I had no wait at all around 7:30 am.
