Related: About this forumPrediction: GOP Superpacks will carpetbomb with Benghazi ads
You can already see from the coverage on Fox News that the GOP thinks it really has something with the Benghazi incident. It is alleging that the cry went up numerous times for more protection to the consulate. The story says that several forces nearby could have been ordered into the area by Obama. But he was too distracted by fundraising trips to be bothered.
My prediction: the various Superpacs that are so flush with money right now will go for broke on this in the last days of the campaign.
The Obama campaign better be ready. In fact, it might consider pre-empting this with ads of their own.

(769 posts)I'd far rather assume the PACs will push this and be ready than to hope it won't work when they try it. I've been fighting the hell out of this thing on my facebook and twitter lately. I'm telling you that Republicans who previously had not paid attention to the race, assuming Romney too beatable are now foaming at the mouth over this.

(2,522 posts)How does a negative view of Obama move Romney's number up? At this point the election is what it is and Mitt Romney is yet again a LOSER.

(769 posts)In the past when we assumed Republicans would NOT go the bottom of the barrel for their attacks or when we assumed the American people would see past the stupidity of their attacks, we've been wrong.
It's far better to aggressively pre-empt the kind of attacks we expect the GOP will make.

(36,418 posts)That's what Stevens was doing in Benghazi, and it's the reason why the Administration doesn't want to talk about the details.

(3 posts)My mom is considering voting for Romney, no matter what issues I talk about she always says the most important issue is national defense, she keeps talking about Obama's "apology tour" but mostly she says he is engaging in a "coverup" regarding the Benghazi attacks and lying about them not being a planned terrorist attack, she always listen to right-wing radio stations and stuff, what do I tell her to convince her about this?
DeltaLitProf
(769 posts)Your mom is probably too far gone toward irrationality to entertain these thoughts, but here goes. During the Bush administration, numerous of our consulates and embassies were attacked. But there was nothing near this kind of politically-motivated inquiry done after those tragedies. Fox News certainly never spearheaded any such inquiry.
If there had been a coverup, why did Obama refer to the attack as a terrorist attack while he was first speaking on the subject in the Rose Garden the next morning?
The latest allegation from Fox is that the General in charge of the US command in Africa was told to stand down. The problem is that in cases in which our diplomats are endangered in foreign countries, we cannot send large forces in to secure the area. We have to rely on the forces of our host countries to protect us. While it may be satisfying to have the US forces arrive en masse to obliterate the natives, we just can't do that.
Here's a blog entry summarizing the latest Fox News allegations:

I told her that but she said "this is a lot more complicated"

She said he didn't, he was just talking about terrorist attacks in general like 9/11
