2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumNo transcripts = No vote.
I at least deserve to know what I'm being asked to vote for.
Hillary's position on foreign policy is pretty clear. I don't agree with it, but I know what I'm getting.
Same with Hillary's positions on women's and LGBT rights. There, I mostly DO agree, aside from some concerning comments regarding late term abortion.
But economic policy, climate change, healthcare, etc. I have NO clue what I'm truly being asked to support. Oh sure, I know what I'm being promised, but I won't fall for that again (as evidenced by the screenname I adopted in 2008, which I've come to consider as a proud political scar)
I want to know who and what I'm truly voting for.
No transcripts = no vote.
Please tell me why that is not a fair request.

(19,460 posts)Has any male candidate for president ever been asked to give transcripts of speeches make as private citizens? No? I didn't think so. Like I said, go vote for Trump.

now that she is victorious this time, there's no problem saying it to others.
when told to "go vote for Romney if you don't like it" in 2008, they went apeshit with indignation...

(1,820 posts)..never thought of speeches containing truth that we should know until Romney and his little speech to rich people about us scummy poor folks. So then we realized that people like Romney, Clinton and others who get paid to speak might be saying things we need to know.....
And then Hillary proved it was true by playing sound blocking machines at a speech she gave so reporters couldn't hear...makes most folks think she might be saying something she didn't want us all to hear.
At least I think that is what is going on.

(1,511 posts)They are trying to compartmentalize the fact they are supporting Hillary following in the steps of Obama, the person that beat them last time despite her attempts to hit him with racist smears. It leaves people a bit confused.

Didn't this guy decide to leave the board after the ass-drubbings Bernie received in Florida and Ohio?
Now back with more whining and demands.

You have great power.
Or, you have just one vote, same as I do.
I dunno.

Aren't you curious too, or is your faith that blind?

(8,168 posts)I have a great deal of confidence in my choice of who to vote for. I've never mentioned it here and I'll never use my vote as a bargaining chip. I don't need to make the candidate jump through a particular hoop to judge their character.

But this is not about my vote for Bernie, he already got that. This is about my (potential) vote for Clinton.

Just don't go writing a whole new set of rules that apply to only one candidate, and that candidate being on our side and not a Republican. Somehow it seems -- icky. Even hypocritical.

(15,805 posts)What would actually be fair would be to impose on every candidate, not just one, some standard that has never been demanded of any other candidate.
Barack_America
(28,876 posts)I don't demand the same of Republicans, because I will never consider voting for them.
madamesilverspurs
(15,805 posts)The standard has to be something different that has never been required of any other candidate. Clearly, (1) transcripts of paid speeches had already been demanded of Clinton, so another entirely different standard must be met; not to mention that (2) it was already understood that Sanders has essentially no record of paid speeches because the office he has held for decades prohibits paid speeches.
Barack_America
(28,876 posts)So yeah, new standards.
Or is she willing to reap all of the benefits of that status, including the massive payday, with none of the responsibilities?
madamesilverspurs
(15,805 posts)And you know it.

(28,876 posts)...speeches. She has referenced them, her opponents have referenced them, there are purported leaks out there that contradict her claims.
No one at this point would be incorrect to ask for the truth. That is what I'm asking for.
Have you no faith in your candidate? If her recollection is accurate, then what do have to fear?

(88 posts)She's had my vote before - she might get it again. What did she have to say to the big muckledeemucks that she can't share with the rest of us? God knows I could use some investment advice - but wait...I don't have enough left over to invest. Never mind.

(6,409 posts)I will vote for anyone I want, for any reason I want. I happen to think my reasons are very good, and based on actual information. But we have millions of voters who cast their ballots because someone is "nice" or even on less than that. I don't think it's right to set up single issue litmus tests such as the transcripts. It cuts both ways. If I set such a condition, and she doesn't reveal what she said, I don't check her box. On the other hand, if she coughs up the transcripts, I am obligated to vote for her, right? Because she met my demands? I'm not comfortable with that.

(9,904 posts)limits you to act usefully, use it to push against that seemingly impregnable invisible wall that separates us from those that wish to reign supreme....
And also from those who blindly believe themselves to be seated safely behind that wall with those now holding all the Aces when the fact is the deck was stacked long ago and thier seemingly safe houses are nothing more than an illusion,
When they get over blaming the wrong people for thier woes as they have for years, they will have no choice but to stand beside and fight with those who they once considered unacceptable to thier lifestyles and ideologies, because in reality they are or will be standing right next to you, survival will demand it..
The world is changing, we cannot stop it, nor can they in truth stop the revolution that must come...

(765 posts)juicy transcripts. There is simply no "there" there. Many people who were at these talks have said over and over that Hillary said nothing controversial.
This is rope-a-dope 101. She will eventually release them, and the ones screaming TRANSCRIPTS will look like idiots. Don't be one of the dopes caught up in that. How embarrassing that would be for you.

(30,481 posts)You mention multiple issues and bring up serious concerns. Seems to be not a one and done thing. More like the straw that will break the camels back for you. No issue and I hope she gives up what you are requesting. As for the primaries, withholding them has been an excellent campaign tactic.
