Trump's new target: Sanders supporters

The GOP front-runner has ratcheted up his rhetoric against presumptive Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton in recent weeks, calling her a "crooked" politician who is unqualified to be president. But when it comes to her challenger, Bernie Sanders, Trump has taken a notably softer tone, praising the Vermont senator's rhetoric and encouraging him to launch a third-party bid.

"I think Bernie Sanders should run as an independent. I think he'd do great," Trump said at a victory rally in New York City Tuesday night, after sweeping five GOP contests in the Northeast.

The next morning, Trump said on MSNBC: "Bernie Sanders has a message that's interesting. I'm going to be taking a lot of the things Bernie said and using them."

Trump's advisers say these comments are a preview of more explicit overtures the campaign is ready to make to Sanders' supporters once the populist liberal exits the 2016 race. That strategy is based on the broad areas of overlap between voters attracted to Trump and those who have flocked to Sanders. Both have angrily denounced the political system as corrupt and expressed deep frustration that Washington is not helping ordinary people. They both oppose international trade deals, saying they hurt American jobs.

1. Last night Bernie Sanders spoke in Indiana

...and spent a long time criticizing Donald Trump.

He portrayed Trump as a bigot who doesn't believe in climate change or that Americans should have higher wages.

Sanders said that every religion teaches, "Love trumps hated." Then the audience chanted, "Love trumps hate."

2. Yeah I think it's pretty clear he is doing that. I'm a Sander's supporter who will vote for Hillary.

Hopefully most Sander's supporters won't buy into forgetting how he "earned" his money and that he is a racist sexist person who has never held a political office.

Bernie and donald don't have much in common at all.

3. Bernie took a lot of his supporters from those who'd otherwise support Trump.

There's a high risk they'll go back if the only other choice is Hillary.

7. I'm saying that Sanders is the one who could pull voters away from Trump.

Yeah, the "not real democrats" and "not real progressives" you guys like to mock.

Hate those voters all you like, but remember that they're still voters. Your only options are to win them over or fail to win them over.

Angry white dudes will never decide another election in this country again. Even the GOP knows that.

I realize that a whole bunch are, and that's what's easiest to spot, but a bunch of the Trump voters are perfectly normal people who are just pissed off at both parties' leaders for squandering their position and power instead of using it to help people, and want to essentially flip the table. Their solutions are garbage, sure, but their complaints are solidly based in reality.

Sanders took those complaints seriously, but pointed them towards positive solutions, so he has the capacity to gain their votes while also tamping down the shitty ideas. Clinton's attitude towards them reflects your own comments, and they're simply not going to listen to (or vote for) a candidate who won't listen to them first. Like I said, feel free to hate them, but that isn't going to help you. You get nowhere in a national campaign by ignoring big chunks of the nation.

I just see a lot of personal level hate towards Hillary from some ( or many on DU ) of Sander's supporters.

Do those people hate Obama as much? Hillary's record is actually 1 point more liberal than Obama and
93% overlapping with Sander's voting record. Plus, for gun control, she is way more anti-gun than Sanders.

This is my basis for personal hate from Sander's supporters towards Hillary.

It used to be all about DU vs Freepers and GOP.

It is actually very sad that Trump thinks he can exploit some of Sander's supporters personal hate
towards Hillary.

However, don't forget to vote for local and national progressive candidates.

and Never Never vote for Trump.

P.S. my post number's a super low for two reason. 1. I started DU around right after 9-11 and then withdraw from DU in 2008. 2. I don't text or type from my iPhone. I only post when I have something to say and it is done from my PC. I also never K&R. Just FYI.

Even those who still can't take enough anti-nausea meds or get an effective clothespin to pull the lever for Hillary aren't going to vote for Trump.
