Clinton in Appalachia Declares: Long Live Coal
Campaigning in Appalachia on Monday, Hillary Clinton claimed she misspoke when previously declaring her opposition to coal, telling voters that as president she would work to ensure that the dirtiest of the fossil fuels will continue to be sold and continue to be mined.
Arriving in Williamson, West Virginiathe heart of coal countrythe Democratic frontrunner was greeted by a wall of protesters who were angry over remarks she made in March foretelling the end of the coal industry.
During the March 13 town hall event, Clinton said that her energy policy would bring economic opportunityusing clean, renewable energy as the keyinto coal country. Because were going to put a lot of coal companies and coal miners out of business.
And earlier, at a November press conference announcing her League of Conservation Voters endorsement, the presidential hopeful declared, We have to move away from coal. Everybody understands that. Theres no doubt about it.

...willing to give electricity we will mine. Until you agree to stop driving you care we will mine. It is US that must change so we don't need coal. Are you willing?

(8,758 posts)44% Chicago's electricity is coal. 40% of its nuclear, 12% is nat. gas and 4% is sustainable. This is a city of 3 million people with 3 million more in the surrounding suburbs. The power draw is astounding.

What are we going to replace coal, nuclear and fracked nat. gas with? Can wind and solar, right now, today, meet the power needs of Chicago?
And then multiply that for every single urban center in America.
Until sustainable energy can meet our power needs, we're going to burn coal. That's reality it sucks but Americans will not allow us to ditch coal until they have something to replace it with.
In coal country, Hillary is looking for votes. Their issues are very simple: they live there and need to work to survive and the work there is coal. So say we shut down coal, what are those people going to do? Where are they going to work and provide for their families? Is that area a good choice for generating renewable energy? Who's going to invest in converting coal country into solar or wind or water country?

I had her pegged from the beginning.
Coal will be business as usual with a lot of yammer about "clean coal" jobs, carbon capture and sequestration.
Natural gas goes the same way, business as usual with talk around cleaning up fracking practices.

(1,735 posts)the first part of that quote. Here it is
Weve got to do a lot more on carbon capture and sequestration, she told voters, and try to see how we can get coal to be a fuel that can continue to be sold and continue to be mined.
Hate when that half truth stuff shows up

(23,664 posts)She has a long and rather sleazy history of "misspeaking".
I'm amazed she can still say the word with a straight face. But she seems quite at ease with it.

Clinton goes to... well basically anywhere... says the pandering opposite of what she said last week somewhere else and gets shouting protestors.
Integrity is everything.

In other words, they actually continue the claim that she has been attacked with, but do it with snippets out of context.

(3,089 posts)It is very comprehensive and thought out and forward looking. No hype, she released it and has been talking about it ever since. She made an unfortunate and misunderstood comment. Campaigning is tiring and people on the trail to make mistakes. She apologized for it and stepped right into the lion's den to address comments from W.Virginians who were very hostile and rude. She calmly addressed their concerns as said that even though they may not support her, she would always support them if she were fortunate enough to win the Presidency. It took a lot of courage and concern to do what she did under the circumstances. Hats off to her for doing this.
She was on this issue long before any other candidate running. Trump follows on with bluster and like-minded individuals believe he is concerned about them.
